iPhone 16 Live Translation: Yes on Every Model, but Only After You Leave iOS 18

iPhone 16 live translation works on the 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max and 16e, but not on iOS 18. The 4 checks, setup with AirPods, and options without them.

Can iPhone 16 live translate? Yes. iPhone 16 live translation is supported on all five models: iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max and 16e. The catch is software. Every iPhone 16 left the factory with iOS 18, and Apple’s Live Translation only exists in iOS 26 and later.

So if you search Translate for a Live tab and find nothing, the phone is fine. It is usually still on iOS 18, or one of three other checks is not done yet. Here they are, in order.

Short answer: Every iPhone 16 model supports Apple’s Live Translation, because all of them support Apple Intelligence. You need iOS 26 or later (iOS 27 is current), Apple Intelligence turned on, supported AirPods (AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2) and one of Apple’s 11 AirPods languages. On iOS 18, the feature does not appear at all.

Does iPhone 16 have live translation?

Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods page asks for an “iPhone 15 Pro or later.” Apple’s Apple Intelligence page (updated October 22, 2026) lists “iPhone 16 models or later.” Put together, the answer is the same for every model:

ModelApple Intelligence?Live Translation with AirPods?
iPhone 16YesYes
iPhone 16 PlusYesYes
iPhone 16 ProYesYes
iPhone 16 Pro MaxYesYes
iPhone 16eYesYes

That answers “does iPhone 16 Plus have live translation” and “is iPhone 16 compatible with live translation” too. The base iPhone 16 and the cheaper 16e translate exactly the same languages as the Pro Max. This differs from the year before, when only the iPhone 15 Pro models made the cut. See our iPhone 15 page for that split.

Why it’s not showing: the 4 checks on iPhone 16

Work down this table. Most people find the problem in row 1 or row 3.

CheckWhere to lookWhat you need
1. iOS versionSettings > General > AboutiOS 26 or later
2. Apple IntelligenceSettings > Apple Intelligence & SiriTurned on, download finished
3. AirPods model and firmwareSettings > Bluetooth > (i) > AboutA supported model with the latest firmware
4. LanguagesSettings > [your AirPods name] > Live Translation (Beta)Both languages downloaded

Still on iOS 18? Many iPhone 16 owners skipped the big update. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If more than one version is offered, choose the newest one, iOS 27. Smaller iOS 18 updates keep the phone safe, but they never add Live Translation.

Apple Intelligence greyed out or still downloading? Keep the iPhone on Wi-Fi and charging for a while. The models download in the background, and Live Translation stays hidden until they finish.

iPhone 16 live translation with AirPods

A supported phone does not make older AirPods supported. This is the most common surprise for people who bought an iPhone 16 and kept the AirPods they already had.

AirPods 4 with Active Noise CancellationYes
AirPods 5Yes
AirPods Max 2Yes
AirPods 4 without ANCNo

Not sure which AirPods 4 you have? The ANC model has a noise control setting in the AirPods menu in Settings. Our AirPods 4 guide shows how to tell them apart.

How to set up live translation on iPhone 16 Pro Max (and every other 16)

Setup is identical on all five models. Do it at home on Wi-Fi, not at the airport.

  1. Update to iOS 27 and turn on Apple Intelligence, as in the table above.
  2. Put both AirPods in your ears so they connect.
  3. Open Settings > [your AirPods name] > Live Translation (Beta) and download the language you speak and the language you will hear.
  4. Open the Translate app, tap Live, pick the two languages and tap Start Translation.

After the first time, you can skip the app. Press and hold both AirPods stems together (AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2 or later), or say “Siri, start Live Translation.” Every iPhone 16 model also has an Action button you can set to Translate in Settings > Action Button. Our step-by-step AirPods guide covers each start method.

Which languages iPhone 16 can translate in your AirPods

Apple’s AirPods feature supports 11 languages on every iPhone: English (US and UK), Spanish (Spain), French (France), German (Germany), Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Korean, and Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified and Traditional). It does not support Turkish, Arabic, Spanish (Mexico) or any other language. Simplified Chinese is not available in China mainland yet; Apple plans to change that with iOS 27.3 in December. The full breakdown is on our languages page.

iPhone 16 live call translation and other modes

Live Translation on iPhone 16 is not only for AirPods. With Apple Intelligence on, you also get:

  • Phone calls: during a call, tap More > Live Translation in the Phone app. No AirPods needed. Details in live translate a phone call.
  • FaceTime: translated live captions on screen.
  • Messages: texts translated as they arrive, with a longer language list that includes Turkish.

Each mode has its own language list on Apple’s feature availability page, so a language working in Messages does not mean it works in your AirPods.

Apple’s feature or an app on iPhone 16?

Pick Apple’s feature if you own supported AirPods and your languages are on the list of 11. It is built into iOS and it is the simplest choice.

Pick an app if your headphones are not supported, or you need Turkish, Arabic or Mexican Spanish. Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, does the listening and translating on the iPhone and plays the result in any wired or Bluetooth headphones about a second later, while the other person keeps talking. It runs offline once a language is downloaded, keeps going with the screen locked, and needs only iOS 18, so it works even before you update. It is made by Little Tough LLC, not Apple.

Quick answers

Does iPhone 16 have live translation? Yes. All iPhone 16 models support Apple’s Live Translation once they run iOS 26 or later with Apple Intelligence turned on.

Does iPhone 16 Pro Max have live translation? Yes. It works the same as on the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16e, with the same 11 AirPods languages.

Can iPhone 16 live translate on iOS 18? No. Apple’s Live Translation arrived with iOS 26. Update to iOS 27 in Settings > General > Software Update.

Do you need iPhone 16 for live translation? No. iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max also qualify, along with every iPhone 17 model, iPhone Air and newer models.

Does iPhone 16e have live translation? Yes. The 16e supports Apple Intelligence, so it gets Live Translation like the other iPhone 16 models.

Why won’t live translation work with my AirPods on iPhone 16? Most often the AirPods are not a supported model (AirPods 2, 3, or AirPods 4 without ANC), their firmware is out of date, or the languages are not downloaded.
