How to turn on Live Translation on AirPods is mostly a question about a switch that isn’t there. There is no “Live Translation” toggle that stays on. You set things up once, then start a translation session each time you need one.
The setup takes about five minutes on Wi-Fi. After that, you start it with a squeeze of both AirPods, a Siri request, the Action button, or the Translate app. Here is every step in order, plus what to do if your AirPods or iPhone can’t run it.
Short answer: Turn on Apple Intelligence, then download your languages in Settings > [your AirPods name] > Live Translation (Beta). To start, press and hold the stem on both AirPods at once, or open Translate, tap Live and tap Start Translation. It works on AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2 with an iPhone 15 Pro or later on iOS 26 or later. Tap the X to stop.
Before you start: what you need
Every item in this table must be true. If one is missing, Live Translation will not start with your AirPods.
| You need | Where to check |
|---|---|
| AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2 | Settings > [your AirPods name], look at the model name |
| iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max or a newer iPhone | Settings > General > About > Model Name |
| iOS 26 or later (iOS 27 is current) | Settings > General > Software Update |
| Apple Intelligence turned on | Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri |
| Latest AirPods firmware | Settings > Bluetooth > (i) next to your AirPods > About |
| Apple’s Translate app | App Store, search “Translate” |
Apple Intelligence downloads its own files after you switch it on, so give it a few minutes on Wi-Fi with the iPhone charging. AirPods firmware updates by itself while the AirPods charge near your iPhone.
How to set up Live Translation on AirPods (one time)
- Put in your AirPods and make sure they are connected to your iPhone.
- Open Settings and tap your AirPods name near the top of the list.
- Tap Live Translation (Beta).
- Pick the languages you want. Download both sides: the language the other person speaks and your own.
That is the whole setup. Once the languages are downloaded, Apple says all processing takes place on your iPhone. Do this before a trip, on hotel or home Wi-Fi, not at the airport gate.
If you do not see Live Translation (Beta) in your AirPods settings, one of the requirements above is not met. The most common cause is an iPhone that has no Apple Intelligence, such as an iPhone 14 or iPhone 15.
4 ways to start Live Translation on AirPods
First, open the Translate app once, tap Live, and choose the language the other person speaks and the language you want to hear. Your iPhone remembers this pair. Then use whichever start method fits the moment.
| Method | What to do | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Both stems | Press and hold the stem on both AirPods at the same time | AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 |
| Listening mode button | Press and hold the listening mode button | AirPods Max 2 |
| Siri | Say “Siri, start Live Translation” | All supported AirPods |
| Action button | Set the Action button to Translate in Settings > Action Button, then press it | iPhones with an Action button |
| Translate app | Open Translate, tap Live, tap Start Translation | All supported AirPods |
The stem squeeze is the fastest in a real conversation, because your phone can stay in your pocket. Hold both stems, not just one. A press on one stem does its normal job, like pausing music.
How to use it once it is on
Let the other person talk. You hear their words in your language in your AirPods, and the Translate app shows a transcript. In a loud place, hold your iPhone closer to the person speaking, since Apple says the iPhone’s microphones can help.
To answer, just speak in your language. Then turn your iPhone so they can read the translation on the Live screen, or tap Play to say it out loud through the iPhone speaker. If they also wear supported AirPods with Live Translation running, they hear your reply in their own ears.
Try a short, clear test sentence first, like “Where is the train station?” Apple warns that translations can be wrong, so double check anything important, like a price, a time or an address.
How to turn off Live Translation on AirPods
Tap the X on the Live Translation screen in the Translate app. That ends the session and your AirPods go back to normal. Nothing stays switched on in the background, and the downloaded languages stay on your iPhone for next time.
To free up space, go back to Settings > [your AirPods name] > Live Translation (Beta) and remove languages you no longer need.
Can you turn on Live Translation on AirPods 2, AirPods 3 or AirPods 4?
Not Apple’s version. AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without Active Noise Cancellation, the original AirPods Pro and the original AirPods Max are not on Apple’s list. Apple’s feature will not start with them, whatever iPhone you use. With AirPods 4, check the box or Settings: only the model with ANC is supported. Our AirPods 4 guide explains how to tell them apart.
The same goes for the iPhone side. On an iPhone 11 to iPhone 14, iPhone 15 or 15 Plus, or an iPhone SE, Apple’s feature cannot be turned on with any AirPods, because those phones do not have Apple Intelligence.
You can still hear live translation in those AirPods. Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, uses Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools that run on iOS 18 without Apple Intelligence. Open it, pick two languages, and the translation plays in your AirPods about a second after the other person speaks.
Apple’s feature or the app?
Your AirPods and iPhone are both on Apple’s list and you need one of Apple’s 11 languages: use Apple’s feature. It is built into iOS, the stem squeeze is quick, and it works well. See the full list in our Live Translation on AirPods guide.
Your AirPods or iPhone are older, you use Beats or other headphones, or you need Turkish, Arabic or Spanish (Mexico): Apple’s feature does not cover you, and an app is the way to get it today. Our app supports 14 languages in any direction, works offline once a language is downloaded, and keeps translating with the screen locked. It is made by Little Tough LLC, not Apple.
If you followed every step and it still will not start, go through our Live Translation not working checklist.
