Does iPhone 17 have live translation? Yes. iPhone 17 live translation works on every model in the family, so the phone is not the problem. If the feature is missing on your new iPhone, the cause is almost always something else: the AirPods, a setting, or the language.

This page covers which iPhone 17 models qualify, the exact setup, which AirPods you need, and what you can do with no AirPods at all.

Short answer: Apple’s Live Translation works on iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, because all of them support Apple Intelligence. To hear translations in your ears you also need supported AirPods (AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2), Apple Intelligence turned on and one of Apple’s 11 AirPods languages. With other earbuds or other languages, you need a different tool.

Does iPhone 17 have live translation?

Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods page asks for “iPhone 15 Pro or later” with iOS 26 or later and Apple Intelligence on. Apple’s Apple Intelligence page lists “iPhone 16 models or later” plus iPhone Air. That covers the whole iPhone 17 line, including the lower-priced 17e.

ModelApple Intelligence?Live Translation with AirPods?
iPhone 17YesYes
iPhone 17 ProYesYes
iPhone 17 Pro MaxYesYes
iPhone 17eYesYes
iPhone AirYesYes

So “does iPhone 17 Pro have live translation” and “does iPhone 17 Pro Max have live translation” get the same answer: yes. There is no Pro-only version of this feature. The 17 and the 17 Pro Max translate the same languages, the same way.

iPhone 17 live translation with AirPods: which ones work

Here is where most new iPhone 17 owners get stuck. A new phone paired with older AirPods still cannot start Apple’s Live Translation. The AirPods have to be on Apple’s list too.

AirPods on your iPhone 17Apple’s Live Translation?
AirPods Pro 3Yes
AirPods Pro 2Yes
AirPods 5 (both models)Yes
AirPods 4 with Active Noise CancellationYes
AirPods Max 2Yes
AirPods 4 without ANCNo
AirPods 2 or AirPods 3No
Original AirPods Pro or original AirPods MaxNo
Beats, Sony, Bose or other earbudsNo

Supported AirPods also need the latest firmware. Check it in Settings > Bluetooth, tap the (i) next to your AirPods, and look under About. Firmware updates on its own while the AirPods charge near your iPhone.

If your AirPods are in the “No” rows, you have two choices: buy supported AirPods, or use an app that does the translating itself and plays it in whatever you already wear.

How to use iPhone 17 live translation

The steps are the same on every iPhone 17 model. Do steps 1 to 3 once, before you travel, while you have Wi-Fi.

  1. Update to the latest iOS in Settings > General > Software Update. iPhone 17 ships with iOS 26 or later, and iOS 27 is current.
  2. Turn on Apple Intelligence in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. Let it finish downloading.
  3. Put in your AirPods, then download both languages in Settings > [your AirPods name] > Live Translation (Beta).
  4. Open the Translate app and tap Live.
  5. Pick the language the other person speaks and the language you want to hear, then tap Start Translation.

Faster ways to start: press and hold both AirPods stems at the same time (AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2 or later), press and hold the listening mode button on AirPods Max 2, or say “Siri, start Live Translation.” You can also set the Action button on the side of your iPhone 17 to open Translate in Settings > Action Button.

When you reply, speak normally. The Translate app shows your words in their language, or plays them out loud through the iPhone speaker. For every start method in detail, see how to turn on Live Translation on AirPods.

iPhone 17 live translation languages

A new phone does not add languages. Apple’s AirPods feature covers the same 11 on every supported iPhone:

LanguageApple’s AirPods feature
English (US), English (UK)Yes
Spanish (Spain)Yes
French (France), German (Germany), ItalianYes
Portuguese (Brazil)Yes
Japanese, KoreanYes
Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified and Traditional)Yes
Spanish (Mexico), Turkish, ArabicNo

Simplified Chinese is not available on iPhones in China mainland yet. Reports from late October say Apple plans to bring Apple Intelligence there with iOS 27.3 in December. The full list, with the Messages and FaceTime languages too, is on our languages page.

iPhone 17 live translation without AirPods

Apple’s “hear it in your ears” mode needs supported AirPods. Without them, your iPhone 17 can still translate in other places:

  • Phone calls: in the Phone app, tap More > Live Translation during a call. See how to live translate a phone call.
  • FaceTime and Messages: translated captions and translated texts, each with its own language list.
  • Face to face: the Translate app’s Conversation mode on the speaker. You take turns, and the phone reads each line out loud.

Conversation mode is fine for a quick question. For a longer talk, it is slow, because nobody can speak while the phone is talking.

When an app is the better fit on iPhone 17

Use Apple’s feature if you have supported AirPods and only need its 11 languages. It is built into iOS and it works well on every iPhone 17.

Use an app if your earbuds are not on Apple’s list or you need Turkish, Arabic or Mexican Spanish. Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, listens through the iPhone, translates on the device and plays the result in any headphones about a second later, while the other person keeps talking. With no headphones, it works turn by turn on the speaker. It keeps going with the screen locked, works offline once a language is downloaded, and is made by Little Tough LLC, not Apple.

For every iPhone model in one table, from iPhone XS to iPhone Duo, see Live Translation on iPhone. For the AirPods side, see Live Translation on AirPods.

Quick answers

Does iPhone 17 have live translation? Yes. Every iPhone 17 model supports Apple’s Live Translation with iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence turned on and supported AirPods.

Does iPhone 17 Pro Max have live translation? Yes. The 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max work the same way as the iPhone 17, with the same 11 AirPods languages.

Do you need iPhone 17 for live translation? No. Apple’s feature starts at iPhone 15 Pro, so iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max and every iPhone 16 model work too.

Can I use iPhone 17 live translation without AirPods? Not the in-ear mode. You can still translate phone calls, FaceTime and Messages, or use the Translate app’s Conversation mode on the speaker.

Why is live translation not showing on my iPhone 17? Usually Apple Intelligence is off, the AirPods are not a supported model or need a firmware update, or the languages are not downloaded yet.

Is live translation free on iPhone 17? Yes. Apple’s Live Translation is built into iOS, with no extra purchase.
