Moto Buds Ultra 27 live translation is the headline feature of the new Motorola earbuds announced on November 5, 2026. Motorola calls it AI Live Translate: someone speaks another language, and you hear the translation in your ears.

The catch is in Motorola’s own fine print. The translating happens on a Motorola phone, not in the earbuds. So if you carry an iPhone, the question is not “how good is it?” but “can I use it at all?” Here is what we know on launch day.

Short answer: Moto Buds Ultra 27 live translation, called AI Live Translate, needs a compatible Motorola phone with a built-in translate app, and Motorola says not every language is supported at launch. On an iPhone, the earbuds work as Bluetooth earbuds, but Motorola does not list AI Live Translate for iOS. iPhone owners can still hear live translation in them with an iPhone translation app.

What Motorola announced on November 5

Motorola introduced the Moto Buds Ultra 27 next to the Moto Watch Fit 27. Some European outlets list the same earbuds as Moto Buds 2 Ultra. The pitch is premium sound with Bose tuning, plus AI features.

FeatureWhat Motorola and early coverage say
Live translationAI Live Translate, with a compatible Motorola phone
Noise cancellationBose-branded ANC and Sound by Bose tuning
BatteryAbout 8 hours per charge, about 37 hours with the case
Water resistanceIP57 (Motorola notes this is not waterproof)
Other AIMotorola Qira assistant on a long press
US release“In the coming months,” no US date or price yet

Motorola has not published a language list for AI Live Translate. Its release only says language support varies and that not all languages are supported at launch.

How Moto Buds live translate works

Think of the earbuds as the speaker and the microphone. The phone does the listening, the translating and the voice. Motorola’s release says the feature “requires a Motorola phone with a built-in translate app,” and that you turn it on in the Moto Buds app.

That is the same design Samsung and Google use. Galaxy Buds live translate only with a Galaxy phone, and Pixel Buds translate best with Android. Apple does the same thing in reverse: AirPods only translate with a supported iPhone.

Do Moto Buds Ultra 27 translate on iPhone?

Not with Motorola’s feature, based on what Motorola has said so far. The translate requirement names a Motorola phone, and iPhones are not mentioned. The earbuds still pair with an iPhone over Bluetooth for music, calls and app audio.

If Motorola adds iPhone support later, we will update this page. For now, plan as if the translation feature stays on Motorola phones.

The app listens through the iPhone microphone. About a second later, you hear the translation in your earbuds while the other person keeps talking. Each phrase shows on screen with its translation under it. To answer, use the Speak tab: the iPhone says your words out loud in their language.

It covers 14 languages: English (US and UK), Spanish (Spain and Mexico), Portuguese (Brazil), French, German, Italian, Turkish, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean and Arabic. Speech and translation run on the iPhone, no audio is uploaded, there is no account, and it works offline once each language is downloaded.

Moto Buds Ultra 27 vs AirPods for live translation

Both put a translation in your ear. What you can use depends on the phone in your pocket.

Apple’s 11 AirPods languages are English (US and UK), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain) and Mandarin Chinese (Simplified and Traditional). Apple says all processing takes place on your iPhone. If you already have a supported iPhone and AirPods, Apple’s feature is built into iOS and is the simple choice. Our Live Translation on AirPods guide has the steps.

Should an iPhone owner buy Moto Buds for translation?

Not for Motorola’s translation feature. Buy them if you like the sound, the fit or the Bose noise cancelling, and know that translation on an iPhone will come from an app, not from Motorola.

If translation is the main reason you are shopping, check your iPhone first. An iPhone 15 Pro or newer can run Apple’s feature with supported AirPods. An iPhone 11 to 14, or a regular iPhone 15 or 15 Plus, can’t, whatever earbuds you buy. Our Live Translation on iPhone guide lists every model. Comparing dedicated translator buds too?
