Can Galaxy Buds translate a conversation live? Yes, but the earbuds are only half of it. The translating is done by Galaxy AI on a Samsung Galaxy phone. The Buds are the microphone and the speaker in your ear.

That detail decides everything. With a Galaxy phone, you get Samsung’s Interpreter and Live Translate. With an iPhone, Galaxy Buds are regular Bluetooth earbuds. Below is which Buds work, how to start it, and what to do if your phone is an iPhone.

Short answer: Galaxy Buds live translate through two Galaxy AI features on a Samsung phone: Interpreter for face to face talks and Live Translate for phone calls. Samsung says audio interpretation only works when you wear the Buds connected to a Galaxy smartphone, and Interpreter needs a Samsung Account. On an iPhone, Galaxy Buds can’t use Samsung’s Interpreter, but you can still hear translations in them with an iPhone translation app.

Do Galaxy Buds translate on their own?

No. Samsung’s own product pages say it plainly: the Interpreter feature “is not directly provided by Buds themselves.” Your Galaxy phone listens, translates and sends the audio to your ears. If the Buds aren’t connected, the translation shows on the phone’s screen instead.

So the real question is not “do my Buds translate?” It is “does my phone run Galaxy AI, and are my Buds on Samsung’s list?”

Which Galaxy Buds have live translate?

Samsung added Buds support for Interpreter and Live Translate in an update in February 2024, starting with the Galaxy Buds2, Buds2 Pro and Buds FE. Newer Buds launched with it. Here is what Samsung and press coverage list.

The phone matters just as much. Samsung’s footnotes list Galaxy AI on phones such as the Galaxy S22, S23 and S24 series and the Z Fold and Z Flip from the 4th generation on, and newer models since. Samsung also says some phones may need the latest software update first.

How to use Galaxy Buds live translate

Samsung’s support page describes two Interpreter modes. Conversation mode is a back and forth chat. Listening mode is one way, for a guide, a lecture or announcements.

  1. Connect your Galaxy Buds to your Galaxy phone and put them in.
  2. Swipe down to open the Quick Panel and tap Interpreter.
  3. Pick the languages. Download a language pack if the phone asks for one.
  4. For a conversation, tap the mic icon or pinch an earbud to start.
  5. For one way listening, open the menu, choose Listening mode, pick your language and tap the mic.

One catch: the earbud’s pinch and hold gesture is set to noise control by default. To start Listening mode with a pinch, change the gesture in the Galaxy Wearable app first.

For phone calls, Live Translate works in Samsung’s own Phone app. You hear the other caller translated in your Buds, and the translated text shows on screen.

Samsung adds that accuracy “is not guaranteed.” That is true of every live translator, Apple’s included, so test it before a trip with a few short phrases.

Do Galaxy Buds translate on iPhone?

Not with Samsung’s Interpreter. It is part of Galaxy AI, and Samsung says audio interpretation only works when the Buds are connected to a Galaxy smartphone. Galaxy Buds still pair with an iPhone over Bluetooth for music and calls, and that is enough to hear translations from an iPhone app.

The app listens through the iPhone microphone. You hear the translation in your Buds about a second later, while the other person keeps talking. Each phrase shows on screen with its translation below it. When you reply, the Speak tab says your words out loud in their language through the iPhone speaker.

It covers 14 languages: English (US and UK), Spanish (Spain and Mexico), Portuguese (Brazil), French, German, Italian, Turkish, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean and Arabic. It needs no account, uploads no audio, keeps going with the screen locked and works offline once each language is downloaded.

Galaxy Buds vs AirPods for live translation

Both let you hear another language in your own. The big difference is the phone each one needs.

Apple’s AirPods feature covers 11 languages: English (US and UK), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Spain) and Mandarin Chinese (Simplified and Traditional). Apple says all processing takes place on your iPhone. If you own a supported iPhone and AirPods and your language is on that list, Apple’s feature is built into iOS and is the easy pick. Switched from a Galaxy phone to an iPhone?

This is the most common reason people search for this. You loved Interpreter on your Galaxy, moved to an iPhone, and your Buds stopped translating. There is nothing to fix: the feature stayed with the Samsung phone.

You have three choices. Keep your Galaxy Buds and use an iPhone app. Buy supported AirPods, if your iPhone is a 15 Pro or newer. Or check whether your iPhone can run Apple’s feature at all in our Live Translation on iPhone guide. An iPhone 11 to 14, or a regular iPhone 15 or 15 Plus, can’t, even with new AirPods.
