Live translation from Korean to English means someone speaks Korean and you hear it in English, in your ears or on your iPhone, while the talk goes on. People look for it before a trip to Seoul or Busan, for a Korean partner’s family, for a church group, or for a coworker on a team call.

Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods does support Korean. Whether it works for you depends on two things: your iPhone model and your AirPods model. Below is what you need, how to set it up, and what to do if your devices are not on Apple’s list.

Short answer: Yes. Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods translates Korean to English on an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence on, iOS 26 or later, and AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2. Korean arrived with iOS 26.1. On other iPhones or headphones, an app built on Apple’s on-device translation can play Korean to English in your ears on iOS 18 or later.

Does Apple live translation do Korean to English?

Yes. Korean is listed on Apple’s iOS feature availability page for Live Translation with AirPods. It was not part of the September 2025 launch. Apple added it with iOS 26.1, along with Japanese, Italian and Chinese.

Korean is also on Apple’s lists for the other Live Translation features. Each one works in a different place:

Apple featureKorean to English? What you get
Live Translation with AirPodsYesSpoken English in your AirPods, face to face
Live Translation in Phone and FaceTimeYesTranslated voice or captions during a call
Live Translation in MessagesYesTexts translated as they arrive
Translate app, ConversationYesText and voice on the iPhone screen and speaker

The first three need an Apple Intelligence iPhone. The Translate app’s Conversation mode does not.

SoftwareiOS 26 or later (iOS 27 is current), Translate app installed

Every iPhone 14 and older is left out, and so are iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. On the AirPods side, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without ANC and the first AirPods Pro do not work with Apple’s feature. Our Live Translation on AirPods guide covers every model.

How to live translate Korean to English, step by step

  1. Connect your AirPods to your iPhone.
  2. Open Settings, tap your AirPods name, then Live Translation (Beta). Download Korean and English on Wi-Fi.
  3. Check that Apple Intelligence is on in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  4. Open the Translate app and tap Live.
  5. Pick Korean as the language being spoken and English as the one you want to hear.
  6. Tap Start Translation, press and hold both AirPods stems, or say “Siri, start Live Translation.”

To answer, speak English. The iPhone shows your words in Korean and can say them out loud. With both languages downloaded, Apple says the processing happens on the iPhone, so it keeps working in the subway with no signal.

Korean to English on an older iPhone or other headphones

Lots of people have an iPhone 13 or iPhone 14 that runs iOS 27 just fine but has no Apple Intelligence. For them, the Live option in the Translate app never appears, no matter which AirPods they own.

Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, fills that gap. It uses Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, which do not need Apple Intelligence. The other person speaks Korean, and about a second later you hear English in your headphones while they keep talking. Each phrase appears on screen with the English below it.

Your setupApple’s AirPods featureLive Translation on Headphones app
iPhone 16 + AirPods Pro 3YesYes
iPhone 16 + AirPods 3 or BeatsNoYes
iPhone 13 or 14 + any AirPodsNoYes
Korean to Turkish or ArabicNoYes

The app works offline once Korean is downloaded, keeps going with the screen locked, and uploads no audio or text. To reply, use its Speak tab: say it in English and the iPhone speaks Korean through the speaker. If your iPhone and AirPods are already on Apple’s list and you only need Korean and English, Apple’s built-in feature is the simpler pick.

Korean phrases to test before you go

Practice with a friend or a Korean video before you count on it. Clear, short sentences come through best.

How good is Korean to English live translation?

It handles everyday talk well: directions, prices, orders, small talk. It struggles more with fast, casual speech among friends. A few things about Korean make it tricky:

  • Speech levels. Korean changes verb endings for polite, formal and casual talk. English has no match, so the respect in a sentence can get lost.
  • Missing subjects. Korean often skips “I” or “you.” The translation may guess the wrong one, so read along on screen.
  • Names and places. Street names, station names and brand names can come out oddly. Check them in the text.
  • Slow it down. 천천히 말해 주세요 (Cheoncheonhi malhae juseyo) means “Please speak slowly.”

Use it for daily life, not for contracts, visas or medical decisions. A human interpreter is the right choice there.

Korean to English with what’s already on your iPhone

Every recent iPhone has Apple’s Translate app. Tap Conversation, choose Korean and English, turn on Auto Translate, and use the Face to Face view. It is good for a quick question at a shop counter. It speaks through the iPhone, not your ears, and works turn by turn.

The Translate app’s Camera tab also helps in Korea, for menus, bus signs and the instructions on a convenience store microwave.

The app is made by Little Tough LLC and is not an Apple product. Our live translation languages guide lists every language Apple and the app support. Heading to Tokyo too? See Live Translation Japanese to English.
