You want to hear Italian in English as it’s spoken. Maybe a waiter in Rome is listing today’s specials, a guide in Florence is explaining a fresco, or your partner’s grandmother in Bari is telling a story at Sunday lunch.
Italian works with Apple’s Live Translation on AirPods, but it wasn’t there on day one. It arrived with iOS 26.1. So the question is whether your iPhone and AirPods qualify, and what to do if they don’t.
Short answer: Yes. Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods translates Italian to English on an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence on, iOS 26.1 or later, and AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2. On older iPhones or other headphones, an app built on Apple’s on-device translation can play Italian to English in your ears on iOS 18 or later.
Does AirPods Live Translation support Italian?
Yes. Italian is on Apple’s iOS feature availability page for Live Translation with AirPods. Apple launched the feature in September 2025 with five languages and said Italian would follow. It came with iOS 26.1, together with Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
Apple has several translation features, and each one lists Italian a little differently. This is what Apple shows today:
| Apple feature | Italian listed | Needs Apple Intelligence |
|---|---|---|
| Live Translation with AirPods | Italian | Yes |
| Live Translation in Phone and FaceTime | Italian, Italian (Switzerland) | Yes |
| Live Translation in Messages | Italian, Italian (Switzerland) | Yes |
| Translate app, Conversation | Italian | No |
Calls and Messages name Swiss Italian on its own line. The AirPods feature has one Italian option for everyone.
What you need for Italian to English on AirPods
| Item | Apple’s requirement |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 15 Pro or later (every iPhone 16, 17 and 18 Pro model, iPhone Air, iPhone Duo), Apple Intelligence on |
| Software | iOS 26.1 or later for Italian (iOS 27 is current), Translate app installed |
| AirPods | AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2, latest firmware |
| Languages | Italian and English downloaded on the iPhone |
Left out: iPhone 14 and older, plus iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without ANC and the first AirPods Pro can’t use Apple’s feature either. Italy is in the EU, where Live Translation with AirPods has worked since iOS 26.2 in December 2025. Our Live Translation on AirPods guide covers every model.
How to live translate Italian to English, step by step
- Put in your AirPods and check they are connected.
- Open Settings, tap your AirPods name, then Live Translation (Beta). Download Italian and English on Wi-Fi before your trip.
- Make sure Apple Intelligence is on in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Open the Translate app and tap Live.
- Choose Italian as the language being spoken and English as the one you want to hear.
- Tap Start Translation, press and hold both AirPods stems, or say “Siri, start Live Translation.”
Apple says all processing happens on the iPhone. With both languages downloaded, it keeps going on a ferry to Capri or a hill town with one bar of signal.
Fast talkers, interruptions and other Italian quirks
Italian conversations move quickly. People often speak at the same time, finish each other’s sentences, and jump in before the last word lands. A translator works best with one voice at a time, so a lively dinner table is the hardest test you can give it.
- Ask for one at a time. “Uno alla volta, per favore” (one at a time, please) works well, and most people laugh and slow down.
- “Prego” means many things. It can mean you’re welcome, please go ahead, come in, or how can I help. The English may sound odd, but the context tells you which.
- Dropped pronouns. Italians often skip “I” or “she” because the verb already says who. “Arriva domani” is “he arrives tomorrow” or “she arrives tomorrow.” A short sentence can come out with the wrong person.
- Lei and tu. Italian has a polite “you” (Lei) and a casual one (tu). Polite Lei looks like “she,” so now and then a translation says “she” when the speaker means you.
- Gestures don’t translate. Plenty of meaning lives in the hands. Watch the speaker, not just the screen.
Swiss Italian and regional dialects
In Ticino, the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland, standard Italian comes through well with the single AirPods option. For calls and Messages, Apple gives Italian (Switzerland) its own entry.
Dialects are harder. Neapolitan, Sicilian, Venetian and others are close to separate languages, and older speakers in small towns may use them at home. Expect weaker results there. Almost everyone also speaks standard Italian, so you can ask: “Può parlare in italiano standard, per favore?” (Can you speak standard Italian, please?).
Words on menus and bills that confuse visitors:
| Italian | What it means |
|---|---|
| coperto | a cover charge per person, normal in many restaurants |
| servizio incluso | service is already included |
| al banco | at the counter, often cheaper than sitting down |
| chiuso per ferie | closed for the holidays |
Italian to English on an older iPhone or other headphones
Many people heading to Italy carry an iPhone 13 or 14, or a new iPhone with AirPods 3. The iPhone 13 and 14 run iOS 27 but have no Apple Intelligence, so the Live button never shows up. A newer iPhone has the button, but AirPods 3 can’t use it.
Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, covers that gap. It uses Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, which don’t need Apple Intelligence. The other person speaks Italian, and about a second later you hear English in your headphones while they keep talking. Each phrase also shows on screen with the English under it.
| Your setup | Apple’s AirPods feature | Live Translation on Headphones app |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 + AirPods Pro 3 | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone 16 + AirPods 3 | No | Yes |
| iPhone 13 or 14 + any AirPods | No | Yes |
| Italian to Spanish (Mexico) or Arabic | No | Yes |
The app works offline once Italian is downloaded, keeps translating with the screen locked, and uploads no audio or text. To answer, use the Speak tab: say it in English and the iPhone says it in Italian through the speaker.
If your iPhone and AirPods are already on Apple’s list and you only need Italian and English, Apple’s built-in feature is the simpler choice.
Italian phrases to test before you go
Practice with a friend or an Italian video first. Short, clear sentences give the best results.
| Italian | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| Parla inglese? | Par-la een-gleh-zeh? | Do you speak English? |
| Il conto, per favore. | Eel kon-toh, pair fa-voh-reh. | The check, please. |
| Da quale binario parte il treno per Firenze? | Da kwa-leh bee-na-ree-oh par-teh eel treh-noh pair fee-ren-tseh? | Which platform does the train to Florence leave from? |
| Posso pagare con la carta? | Pos-soh pa-ga-reh kon la kar-ta? | Can I pay by card? |
| Può parlare più lentamente? | Pwoh par-la-reh pyoo len-ta-men-teh? | Can you speak more slowly? |
The train question saves trouble. Platforms in big Italian stations often change at the last minute, and the announcement is in Italian first.
Italian to English with what’s already on your iPhone
Every recent iPhone has Apple’s Translate app. Tap Conversation, pick Italian and English, turn on Auto Translate, and use the Face to Face view. It’s good for a quick chat at a pharmacy or hotel desk. It speaks out loud through the iPhone, not into your ears, and goes turn by turn.
The Camera tab in Translate is useful for menus, museum signs and the parking rules on a street sign.
Use these tools for travel and daily talk. For rental contracts, residency paperwork, legal matters or medical decisions, use a human interpreter.
The app is made by Little Tough LLC and is not an Apple product. Our live translation languages guide lists every language Apple and the app support. Crossing the Alps next? See Live Translation German to English.
