Someone is speaking German and you want to hear it in English, right now, without passing your phone back and forth. It could be a ticket inspector on a train to Munich, a stall owner at a Christmas market in Vienna, or a coworker on a call from Hamburg.
German is one of the languages Apple supported from the very first day of Live Translation with AirPods. So the real question is whether your iPhone and AirPods qualify, and what to do if they don’t.
Short answer: Yes. Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods translates German (Germany) to English on an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence on, iOS 26 or later, and AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2. German has been included since the September 2025 launch. On older iPhones or other headphones, an app built on Apple’s on-device translation can play German to English in your ears on iOS 18 or later.
Does AirPods Live Translation support German?
Yes. German (Germany) is on Apple’s iOS feature availability page for Live Translation with AirPods. It launched in September 2025 together with English, French, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish (Spain).
Apple has several features with “translation” in the name, and each has its own German list. This is what Apple shows today:
| Apple feature | German listed | Needs Apple Intelligence |
|---|---|---|
| Live Translation with AirPods | German (Germany) | Yes |
| Live Translation in Phone and FaceTime | German (Germany) | Yes |
| Live Translation in Messages | Germany, Austria, Switzerland | Yes |
| Translate app, Conversation | German | No |
Only Messages names Austrian and Swiss German. For spoken translation in your ears or on a call, there is one German option.
What you need for German to English on AirPods
| Item | Apple’s requirement |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 15 Pro or later (every iPhone 16, 17 and 18 Pro model, iPhone Air, iPhone Duo), Apple Intelligence on |
| Software | iOS 26 or later (iOS 27 is current), Translate app installed |
| AirPods | AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2, latest firmware |
| Languages | German and English downloaded on the iPhone |
Not on the list: iPhone 14 and older, plus iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without ANC and the first AirPods Pro don’t work with Apple’s feature either. Germany is in the EU, and Live Translation with AirPods has worked there since iOS 26.2 in December 2025. Our Live Translation on AirPods guide covers every model.
How to live translate German to English, step by step
- Put in your AirPods and make sure they are connected.
- Go to Settings, tap your AirPods name, then Live Translation (Beta). Download German and English while you’re on Wi-Fi.
- Check that Apple Intelligence is on in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Open the Translate app and tap Live.
- Set German as the language being spoken and English as the language you want to hear.
- Tap Start Translation, press and hold both AirPods stems, or say “Siri, start Live Translation.”
Apple says all processing happens on the iPhone. With both languages downloaded, it keeps working in a U-Bahn tunnel or on a mountain train with no signal.
Why German translation can feel a beat behind
This is the German quirk most guides don’t mention. In many German sentences, the main verb comes at the very end. Take “Ich habe den Zug nach Berlin leider verpasst.” Word by word, it reads “I have the train to Berlin unfortunately missed.”
A translator can’t say “missed” in English until the speaker says “verpasst.” So with long sentences, the English may arrive a little later than with French or Spanish. That is normal, not a fault.
- Short sentences help. Ask the other person to speak in short pieces if the delay bothers you.
- “Nicht” can come late too. “Das Restaurant ist heute nicht geöffnet” only turns negative near the end. Wait for the full sentence before you act.
- Long compound words. German glues nouns together: “Fahrkartenautomat” is ticket machine. Translation usually handles these, but rare ones can come out oddly.
- Sie and du. German has a polite “you” and a casual one. English has one word, so the level of politeness gets lost.
Austrian and Swiss German: will it understand them?
For AirPods and calls, Apple lists only German (Germany). People in Vienna, Graz or Zurich use that same option. Standard German from Austria or Switzerland, the kind you hear on the news or at a hotel desk, usually comes through fine.
Spoken Swiss German (Schweizerdeutsch) is another story. In daily life many Swiss people speak a dialect that even Germans can find hard. Expect weaker results with it. A simple fix: ask, “Können Sie bitte Hochdeutsch sprechen?” (Can you please speak standard German?). Most Swiss people switch without a fuss.
Austria has its own everyday words, too:
| Austria | Germany | English |
|---|---|---|
| Paradeiser | Tomaten | tomatoes |
| Erdäpfel | Kartoffeln | potatoes |
| Jänner | Januar | January |
| Servus | Hallo / Tschüss | hi / bye |
German to English on an older iPhone or other headphones
A lot of travelers heading to Germany carry an iPhone 13 or 14, or an iPhone 16 with AirPods 3. The iPhone 13 and 14 run iOS 27 but have no Apple Intelligence, so the Live button never appears. The iPhone 16 has the Live button, but AirPods 3 can’t use it.
Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, fills that gap. It uses Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, which don’t need Apple Intelligence. The other person speaks German, and about a second later you hear English in your headphones while they keep talking. Each phrase also shows on screen with the English under it.
| Your setup | Apple’s AirPods feature | Live Translation on Headphones app |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 + AirPods Pro 3 | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone 16 + AirPods 3 | No | Yes |
| iPhone 13 or 14 + any AirPods | No | Yes |
| German to Turkish or Arabic | No | Yes |
That last row matters in Germany, where many families speak Turkish or Arabic at home. Apple’s AirPods feature has neither, while the app does both in any direction. It works offline once German is downloaded, keeps going with the screen locked, and uploads no audio or text. To reply, use the Speak tab: say it in English and the iPhone speaks it in German through the speaker.
If your iPhone and AirPods are already on Apple’s list and you only need German and English, Apple’s built-in feature is the easier pick.
German phrases to test before you go
Try these with a friend or a German video first. Short, clear sentences give the best results.
| German | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| Sprechen Sie Englisch? | Shpre-khen zee eng-lish? | Do you speak English? |
| Von welchem Gleis fährt der Zug nach München? | Fon vel-khem glice fairt dair tsoog nakh mewn-khen? | Which platform does the train to Munich leave from? |
| Einen Glühwein, bitte. | Eye-nen glew-vine, bit-uh. | One mulled wine, please. |
| Kann ich mit Karte zahlen? | Kahn ikh mit kar-tuh tsah-len? | Can I pay by card? |
| Können Sie das bitte langsamer sagen? | Kern-en zee dahs bit-uh lahng-zah-mer zah-gen? | Can you say that more slowly, please? |
The card question is worth knowing. Plenty of small shops, bakeries and market stalls in Germany still prefer cash.
German to English with what’s already on your iPhone
Every recent iPhone has Apple’s Translate app. Tap Conversation, choose German and English, turn on Auto Translate, and use the Face to Face view. It works well for a quick chat at a pharmacy or hotel desk. It speaks out loud through the iPhone, not into your ears, and goes turn by turn.
The Camera tab in Translate is handy for German menus, train notices and parking signs.
Use any of these for travel and daily talk. For leases, residence permits, contracts or medical decisions, book a human interpreter.
The app is made by Little Tough LLC and is not an Apple product. Our live translation languages guide lists every language Apple and the app support. Heading on to Paris? See Live Translation French to English.
