You want to hear French in English while the person keeps talking. Maybe it’s a waiter in Paris, a host family in Lyon, a client in Montreal, or your partner’s grandmother at dinner. The question is simple: can your iPhone and AirPods do that today?

For French, the answer is mostly good news. French was one of the first languages in Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods. The catch is your hardware, plus one detail about which French Apple lists.

Short answer: Yes. Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods translates French (France) to English on an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence on, iOS 26 or later, and AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2. French has been in the feature since its September 2025 launch. On other iPhones or headphones, an app built on Apple’s on-device translation can play French to English in your ears on iOS 18 or later.

Does Apple Live Translation support French?

Yes. French (France) is on Apple’s iOS feature availability page for Live Translation with AirPods. It was there on day one in September 2025, with English, German, Portuguese (Brazil) and Spanish (Spain).

Apple uses the name Live Translation for four different things. Here is how French fits each one, as Apple lists it today:

Apple featureFrench listedWhat you get
Live Translation with AirPodsFrench (France)Spoken English in your AirPods, face to face
Live Translation in Phone and FaceTimeFrench (France)Translated voice or captions on a call
Live Translation in MessagesFrance, Canada, Belgium, SwitzerlandTexts translated as they arrive
Translate app, ConversationFrenchText and voice on the iPhone screen and speaker

The first three need an iPhone with Apple Intelligence. The Translate app’s Conversation mode works on any recent iPhone.

French from France vs French from Quebec

This is the part most pages skip. For AirPods and for calls, Apple lists only French (France). There is no separate Canadian, Belgian or Swiss French option there, even though Messages has all of them.

In practice, a speaker from Montreal or Brussels uses the same French option. Clear, everyday speech usually comes through fine. Strong regional accents, fast speech and local words can lower the quality. Quebec French has words you won’t hear in Paris:

QuebecFranceEnglish
un charune voiturea car
magasinerfaire du shoppingto go shopping
le déjeunerle petit-déjeunerbreakfast
le souperle dînerdinner

A word like “déjeuner” means breakfast in Quebec and lunch in France. A translation can get the word right and the meal wrong. Read along on screen when times and meals matter.

What you need for French live translation on AirPods

ItemApple’s requirement
iPhoneiPhone 15 Pro or later, Apple Intelligence turned on
SoftwareiOS 26 or later (iOS 27 is current), Translate app installed
AirPodsAirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2, latest firmware
LanguagesFrench (France) and English downloaded

Left out: every iPhone 14 and older, plus iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. On the AirPods side, AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without ANC and the first AirPods Pro do not work with Apple’s feature. Our Live Translation on AirPods guide covers every model.

How to live translate French to English, step by step

  1. Connect your AirPods to your iPhone.
  2. Open Settings, tap your AirPods name, then Live Translation (Beta). Download French and English on Wi-Fi.
  3. Make sure Apple Intelligence is on in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  4. Open the Translate app and tap Live.
  5. Choose French as the language being spoken and English as the one you want to hear.
  6. Tap Start Translation, press and hold both AirPods stems, or say “Siri, start Live Translation.”

When you answer in English, the iPhone shows your words in French and can say them out loud. Apple says the processing happens on the iPhone, so with both languages downloaded it keeps working in the Paris Métro with no signal.

French to English on an older iPhone or other headphones

Many people heading to France carry an iPhone 13 or iPhone 14. It runs iOS 27, but it has no Apple Intelligence, so the Live button in the Translate app never shows up. New AirPods won’t change that.

Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, is built for that case. It uses Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, which do not need Apple Intelligence. The other person speaks French, and about a second later you hear English in your headphones while they keep talking. Each phrase shows on screen with the English below it.

Your setupApple’s AirPods featureLive Translation on Headphones app
iPhone 17 + AirPods Pro 3YesYes
iPhone 16 + AirPods 3 or BeatsNoYes
iPhone 12, 13 or 14 + any AirPodsNoYes
French to Arabic or TurkishNoYes

The app works offline once French is downloaded, keeps going with the screen locked, and uploads no audio or text. To reply, use its Speak tab: say it in English and the iPhone speaks French through the speaker. If your iPhone and AirPods are already on Apple’s list and you only need French and English, Apple’s built-in feature is the simpler choice.

French phrases to test before your trip

Try these with a friend or a French video before you rely on it. Short, clear sentences translate best.

How accurate is French to English live translation?

It does well with daily life: train times, menus, prices, directions, polite small talk. It has a harder time with fast talk among friends. A few things to watch:

  • Tu and vous. French has a casual “you” and a polite “you.” English has one, so the tone of respect can disappear.
  • Words that run together. Spoken French links words, so “vous avez” sounds like one word. Fast speech can blur into the wrong meaning.
  • Numbers. 70, 80 and 90 are built from other numbers in France (“quatre-vingts” is four twenties). Belgium and Switzerland say some of them differently. Check prices and times on screen.
  • Slang. Words like “ouf” or “chelou” may come out oddly. Ask the person to say it another way.

Use it for travel and daily talk, not for leases, visas or medical choices. Book a human interpreter there.

French to English with what’s already on your iPhone

Every recent iPhone has Apple’s Translate app. Tap Conversation, pick French and English, turn on Auto Translate, and use the Face to Face view. It suits a quick question at a pharmacy counter or a hotel desk. It speaks through the iPhone, not your ears, and works turn by turn.

The Camera tab in Translate also helps in France, for menus, museum signs and ticket machines.

The app is made by Little Tough LLC and is not an Apple product. Our live translation languages guide lists every language Apple and the app support. Going on to Spain? See Live Translation Spanish to English.
