Live translation from Spanish to English means someone speaks Spanish and you hear English in your ears a second later. People want it for a trip to Madrid or Cancún, a Spanish-speaking coworker, a neighbor, or a partner’s family at dinner.

Spanish is one of the first languages Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods supported. But Apple lists one kind of Spanish: Spanish (Spain). That matters if the person you talk to is from Mexico, and it matters even more if your iPhone or AirPods are not on Apple’s list.

Short answer: Yes. Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods translates Spanish (Spain) to English on an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence turned on, iOS 26 or later, and AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2. Apple does not list Spanish (Mexico) for this feature. For Mexican Spanish, older iPhones or other headphones, an app that uses Apple’s on-device translation can play Spanish to English in your ears on iOS 18 or later.

Does Apple Live Translation support Spanish?

Yes, since launch in September 2025. Apple’s feature availability page lists Spanish (Spain) for Live Translation with AirPods. The same single Spanish shows up for live calls in the Phone app and FaceTime.

Messages is different. Its Live Translation list has three kinds of Spanish: Spain, Mexico and the United States. So your texts can handle Mexican Spanish, but Apple’s in-person AirPods feature does not list it.

Does the Spain model understand a speaker from Mexico City or Bogotá? Often it will catch common words, since the languages share most of their vocabulary. But Apple does not promise it, and local words and accents are where it can slip. Test it with the person you will actually talk to.

What you need for Spanish to English on AirPods

Apple’s feature needs every item in this table. If one is missing, the Live option will not appear or will not start.

RequirementWhat Apple asks for
iPhoneiPhone 15 Pro or later, with Apple Intelligence turned on
SoftwareiOS 26 or later (iOS 27 is current), with the Translate app installed
AirPodsAirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2, on the latest firmware
LanguagesSpanish (Spain) and English downloaded to the iPhone

iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus and every iPhone 14 or older are not on the list. Neither are AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without ANC or the original AirPods Pro. Our Live Translation on AirPods guide covers every model.

How to live translate Spanish to English, step by step

  1. Put in your AirPods and connect them to your iPhone.
  2. Go to Settings, tap your AirPods name, then Live Translation (Beta). Download Spanish and English while you are on Wi-Fi.
  3. Check that Apple Intelligence is on in Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  4. Open the Translate app and tap Live.
  5. Set the language being spoken to Spanish and the language you want to hear to English.
  6. Tap Start Translation. You can also press and hold both AirPods stems, or say “Siri, start Live Translation.”

When you answer, speak English. The iPhone shows your words in Spanish and can read them out loud for the other person. Apple says all processing takes place on the iPhone.

Mexican Spanish, older iPhones and other headphones

Most people who search for this have one of three problems. Their iPhone is an iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14 or base iPhone 15, which cannot run Apple Intelligence. Their earbuds are AirPods 2, AirPods 3, Beats or another brand. Or the person they talk to speaks Mexican Spanish.

Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, handles all three. It has Spanish (Spain) and Spanish (Mexico) as separate choices and uses Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, which do not need Apple Intelligence. The other person speaks, and you hear English in your headphones about a second later while they keep talking.

Your situationApple’s AirPods featureLive Translation on Headphones app
iPhone 15 Pro or later + AirPods Pro 2 or 3, Spanish (Spain)YesYes
Speaker uses Spanish (Mexico)NoYes
iPhone 11 to 14, iPhone 15 or 15 PlusNoYes
AirPods 2, AirPods 3, Beats or other headphonesNoYes

The app keeps translating with the screen locked, works offline once the languages are downloaded, and uploads no audio or text. If you have a supported iPhone and AirPods and you mostly talk with people from Spain, Apple’s built-in feature does the job and you may not need anything else.

Spanish phrases to test: Spain vs Mexico

Everyday words can change between the two countries. Try a few of these with a friend or a video before you depend on live translation.

SpainMexicoEnglish
¿Dónde puedo coger el autobús?¿Dónde puedo tomar el camión?Where can I catch the bus?
Mi móvil no tiene batería.Mi celular no tiene pila.My phone is out of battery.
Vale, ahora vamos.Órale, ahorita vamos.Okay, we’ll go now (or soon).
La cuenta, por favor.La cuenta, por favor. The check, please.
¿Tenéis una mesa para dos?¿Tienen una mesa para dos?Do you have a table for two?

Notice “ahorita.” In Mexico it can mean “right now” or “in a little while,” and no translator can always tell which. Ask when it matters.

How accurate is Spanish to English live translation?

Spanish is one of the easier pairs for machine translation, and everyday talk usually comes through well. Fast speech, slang and several people talking at once cause most mistakes.

  • Hold the iPhone close to the speaker in a loud bar or market.
  • Ask for a slower pace: Más despacio, por favor means “Slower, please.”
  • Read the screen for prices, times and street names.
  • Skip it for serious matters like contracts, legal papers or medical decisions. Use a human interpreter there.

Spanish to English with what’s already on your iPhone

Every recent iPhone has Apple’s Translate app. Its Conversation tab works with Spanish and English on the speaker: pick the two languages, turn on Auto Translate, and choose Face to Face so each person reads their side. It is fine for a quick question at a hotel desk. It does not play into your ears while the other person keeps talking. We compare the options in live translation in person on iPhone.

For calls with Spanish speakers, see how to live translate a phone call.

The app is made by Little Tough LLC, not Apple. For every language Apple and the app support, see our live translation languages guide.
