You speak English. The person in front of you speaks Spanish. You want to talk, have your words come out in Spanish, and understand what they say back. That is what people mean by live translation English to Spanish.

The listening half gets most of the attention. This page is about the other half: how your English actually reaches a Spanish speaker on an iPhone, what each option does with your voice, and which one fits a person from Mexico instead of Spain.

Short answer: On an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence and iOS 26 or later, Apple’s Live Translation turns your English into Spanish (Spain): the other person reads it in the Translate app, hears it from the iPhone speaker, or hears it in their own supported AirPods. Your AirPods are only needed for hearing their Spanish in English. For older iPhones, other headphones or Mexican Spanish, an app built on Apple’s on-device translation can speak your English out loud in Spanish on iOS 18 or later.

How live translation English to Spanish works on iPhone

Every option has two directions. They hear you, and you hear them. Apple handles the two directions in different ways, which surprises a lot of first-time users.

With Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods, their Spanish is played in English inside your AirPods. When you answer in English, Apple says to use the Live tab in the Translate app to show a transcript, or press Play to play the Spanish on the iPhone speaker. If the other person also has supported AirPods and has started Live Translation, they can hear your reply in their own ears.

DirectionWhat happens with Apple’s feature
They speak SpanishYou hear English in your AirPods
You speak EnglishSpanish text on your iPhone screen
You tap PlaySpanish spoken out loud from the iPhone speaker
They wear supported AirPods tooThey hear your reply in Spanish in their ears

So the Spanish speaker does not need anything special. They can read your screen or listen to your phone.

RequirementApple’s list

SoftwareiOS 26 or later, with the Translate app
AirPodsAirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2, latest firmware

iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 14 or older do not qualify. Neither do AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without ANC or the first AirPods Pro. Our Live Translation on AirPods guide lists every model.

How to translate English to Spanish live, step by step

  1. Connect your AirPods. Go to Settings, tap your AirPods name, then Live Translation (Beta), and download English and Spanish on Wi-Fi.
  2. Make sure Apple Intelligence is on.
  3. Open the Translate app and tap Live.
  4. Choose Spanish as the language the other person speaks and English as the language you want to hear.
  5. Tap Start Translation, press and hold both AirPods stems, or say “Siri, start Live Translation.”
  6. When you answer, speak English in short sentences. Turn the screen toward them, or tap Play so the iPhone says it in Spanish.

Apple says all processing takes place on the iPhone once the languages are downloaded.

English to Mexican Spanish: the catch

Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods lists one Spanish: Spanish (Spain). Your reply will be written and spoken in that Spanish. Most Mexicans will understand it fine. But some words are not the ones they use, and the Spain voice sounds foreign in Guadalajara or Los Angeles.

You say in EnglishSpain often saysMexico often says
Can I borrow your phone?¿Me dejas tu móvil?¿Me prestas tu celular?
Where do I park the car?¿Dónde aparco el coche?¿Dónde estaciono el carro?
Do you all want juice?¿Queréis zumo?¿Quieren jugo?
Let’s take the bus.Vamos a coger el autobús.Vamos a tomar el camión.

“Coger” is the one to watch. It is normal in Spain and rude in Mexico. A Spain-trained translation may still use it, so read the screen before you tap Play with a Mexican family.

Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, has Spanish (Mexico) and Spanish (Spain) as separate choices. In its Speak tab you say your reply in English and the iPhone says it out loud in the Spanish you picked.

Older iPhones, other headphones, no Apple Intelligence

If your iPhone is an iPhone 11, 12, 13, 14, or a base iPhone 15, Apple’s AirPods feature will not appear. The same goes for AirPods 2, AirPods 3, Beats and other brands. The app covers those cases.

Your setupApple’s AirPods featureLive Translation on Headphones
iPhone 15 Pro or later, AirPods Pro 2 or 3, Spain SpanishYesYes
You need Spanish (Mexico)NoYes
iPhone 11 to 14, iPhone 15 or 15 Plus on iOS 18NoYes
AirPods 2, AirPods 3, Beats or wired headphonesNoYes

It runs on Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, works offline once the languages are downloaded, keeps going with the screen locked, and uploads no audio or text. If you already have a supported iPhone and AirPods and you mostly talk with people from Spain, Apple’s built-in feature is the simpler choice.

English to Spanish with no headphones at all

For a quick exchange at a front desk or a taxi, the Translate app’s Conversation tab is enough. Pick English and Spanish, turn on Auto Translate, and choose Face to Face so each person reads their own side. Each of you speaks in turn and the iPhone answers out loud. We compare all the in-person options in live translation in person on iPhone.

Tips so your English comes out as good Spanish

  • One idea per sentence. “The pool closes at nine. Is that right?” translates better than one long sentence.
  • Skip idioms. “Break a leg” or “it’s a piece of cake” can come out word for word.
  • Say names and numbers clearly, then check them on the screen.
  • Use “you all” when you mean a group. Spanish has a separate plural “you,” and this helps the translation pick it.
  • Use a human interpreter for contracts, legal papers or medical decisions.

The app is made by Little Tough LLC, not Apple. For the other direction, read live translation Spanish to English. For every supported language, see our live translation languages guide.
