Live translation from Chinese to English means hearing Mandarin turned into English in your ears while the other person is still talking. People want it for business trips to Shanghai, family visits in Taipei, or a partner’s parents who only speak Mandarin.

Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods does support Mandarin Chinese, in two versions. But there are three catches: your iPhone and AirPods must be on Apple’s list, one version is not available in China mainland, and Cantonese is not supported at all. This page walks through each one.

Short answer: Yes, Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods can translate Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified or Traditional) to English, on an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence and supported AirPods. Apple says the Simplified option is not available in China mainland, and Apple Intelligence itself does not work there yet for most people. On older iPhones or other headphones, an app that uses Apple’s on-device translation can play Mandarin to English in any AirPods.

Does AirPods Live Translation support Chinese?

Yes. Apple added Chinese with iOS 26.1, along with Italian, Japanese and Korean. Apple’s feature availability page lists two Chinese options for Live Translation with AirPods:

Chinese optionSpoken languageCharacters on screenApple’s note
Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified)MandarinSimplified, as used in mainland China and SingaporeNot available in China mainland
Chinese (Mandarin, Traditional)MandarinTraditional, as used in TaiwanNone
CantoneseCantoneseNot offeredNot in the list

Both options are spoken Mandarin. The difference you see is in the written transcript. If you are talking with someone from Hong Kong or Guangdong who speaks Cantonese, Apple’s AirPods feature will not understand them.

What you need for Chinese to English on AirPods

SoftwareiOS 26 or later (iOS 27 is current), with the Translate app installed
AirPodsAirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2, on the latest firmware
LanguagesChinese (Mandarin) and English downloaded to the iPhone

iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are not on the list, and neither is any iPhone 14 or older. AirPods 2, AirPods 3 and AirPods 4 without ANC are left out too. The full device list is in our Live Translation on AirPods guide.

How to set up Chinese to English live translation

  1. Put your AirPods in and connect them to your iPhone.
  2. Open Settings, tap the name of your AirPods, then tap Live Translation (Beta).
  3. Download Chinese (Mandarin, Traditional) or Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified), and English.
  4. Open the Translate app and tap Live.
  5. Set the language being spoken to Chinese and the language you want to hear to English.
  6. Tap Start Translation, press and hold both AirPods stems, or say “Siri, start Live Translation.”

Download both languages on Wi‑Fi before you leave home. It saves time and data, and you won’t be stuck waiting at the moment you need it.

Does AirPods Live Translation work in China?

This is where most travelers get confused. Apple’s Apple Intelligence support page sets two rules for China mainland:

  • Apple Intelligence does not currently work on iPhones bought in China mainland.
  • On iPhones bought elsewhere, it does not work if you are in China mainland and your Apple Account country or region is also China mainland.

So a visitor with an iPhone bought in the US, UK or Europe and a non-China Apple Account can keep using Apple Intelligence while in China. The feature availability page still marks the Simplified Chinese option as not available in China mainland, so plan on Chinese (Mandarin, Traditional) for Mandarin speech there. It is the same spoken language; only the characters on screen differ.

Is Apple Intelligence coming to China in December?

Possibly. On October 14, 2026, Bloomberg reported that Apple plans to launch Apple Intelligence in mainland China in December with iOS 27.3, using Alibaba’s models. The reported first set is Writing Tools, notification summaries, Genmoji and Clean Up. Live Translation was not named in the report, and Apple has not announced a date.

Apple’s own page says that when Apple Intelligence arrives in China mainland, supported iPhones will get “a core set” of features, and new features will wait on regulators. We will update this page when Apple confirms what that set includes.

Chinese to English live translation without Apple Intelligence

If your iPhone is an iPhone 15 or older, or your earbuds are AirPods 3 or Beats, Apple’s AirPods feature is off for you. You still have two options.

The built-in Translate app has a Conversation mode that works on the iPhone speaker without Apple Intelligence. It is good for short exchanges at a hotel desk or a pharmacy counter.

For longer talks, our app Live Translation on Headphones listens through the iPhone and plays the English in your headphones about a second later, while the other person keeps speaking. It supports Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional) in any direction, using Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools. It works offline once a language is downloaded, and it keeps going with the screen locked.

Mandarin phrases to test it with

Before a trip, play a few common phrases to check that your setup works. Ask a Mandarin speaking friend to say these, or play a clip. You should hear something close to the English column.

MandarinPinyinEnglish
多少钱?Duōshao qián?How much is it?
洗手间在哪里?Xǐshǒujiān zài nǎlǐ?Where is the restroom?
请慢一点说。Qǐng màn yìdiǎn shuō.Please speak a little slower.
地铁站怎么走?Dìtiě zhàn zěnme zǒu?How do I get to the subway station?
我不吃辣。Wǒ bù chī là.I don’t eat spicy food.

Tips for better Chinese to English accuracy

  • Mandarin only. Strong regional accents and mixed Cantonese or Shanghainese will cause errors.
  • Short sentences help. Ask the speaker to pause between ideas. “请慢一点说” works well.
  • Names and numbers. Check prices, addresses and times on the screen transcript, not just by ear.
  • Noise. In a loud restaurant, hold the iPhone a little closer to the speaker.

Which one should you use?

If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later, supported AirPods, and you are not relying on an iPhone or Apple Account from China mainland, use Apple’s built-in feature. It is already on your phone.

If your iPhone or earbuds are not on Apple’s list, an app that plays translations in any headphones is the practical way to get live Mandarin to English in your ears.

The app is made by Little Tough LLC and is not affiliated with Apple. For every language Apple and the app support, see our Live Translation languages guide, and for Apple’s feature in general, our Apple Live Translation guide.
