AirPods 3 live translation is a tricky search, because two very different products share the number 3. AirPods 3 came out in 2021. AirPods Pro 3 came out in 2025. One works with Apple’s Live Translation, and the other does not.
So the first job is to find out which pair is in your case. Then you will know if the feature is one tap away, or if you need another way to hear translations in your ears.
Short answer: AirPods 3 (model numbers A2564, A2565) do not support Apple’s Live Translation, and no update adds it. AirPods Pro 3 do support it, with an iPhone 15 Pro or later on iOS 26 or later and Apple Intelligence turned on. If you own AirPods 3, you can still hear live translations in them with a third-party app that plays the translation in any headphones.
Does AirPods 3 have live translation?
No. Apple’s support page lists the AirPods that work: AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2. AirPods 3 are not on the list, and Apple does not mention them anywhere on the page.
A new iPhone does not change this. Pair AirPods 3 with an iPhone 17 Pro on iOS 27, and the iPhone is ready, but the AirPods are not. The Live Translation option will simply not appear for them.
AirPods 3 vs AirPods Pro 3: which one do you have?
Many people who type “AirPods 3 live translation” actually own AirPods Pro 3. The names are close, but the answer is opposite. This table sorts it out.
| What to check | AirPods 3 | AirPods Pro 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Released | 2021 | 2025 |
| Name in Settings | AirPods (3rd generation) | AirPods Pro 3 |
| Silicone ear tips | No | Yes |
| Active Noise Cancellation | No | Yes |
| Apple’s Live Translation | No | Yes |
The quickest clue is the ear tips. AirPods 3 have a hard, open fit that rests in your ear. AirPods Pro 3 have soft rubber tips that seal the ear canal.
If you have AirPods Pro 3, you are in luck. Read our AirPods Pro 3 Live Translation guide for setup, languages and the iPhone you need.
How to check your model number
- Put the AirPods in your ears so they connect to your iPhone.
- Open Settings and tap your AirPods’ name near the top. Or go to Settings > Bluetooth and tap the “i” next to them.
- Look at Model Number. A2564 or A2565 means AirPods 3.
- While you are there, scroll the AirPods menu. Supported AirPods show a Live Translation (Beta) item. AirPods 3 do not.
Why AirPods 3 don’t get Live Translation
Apple has not said why. What we know is that AirPods 3 use Apple’s older H1 chip and have no noise cancellation. Every AirPods model on the supported list is newer, and the in-ear models on the list all have Active Noise Cancellation.
Noise cancellation matters here. Apple’s feature lowers the other person’s voice so you can focus on the translation. AirPods 3 cannot do that.
Apple also has not announced plans to add AirPods 3. Since Live Translation launched in September 2025, Apple has added languages, the EU and, with iOS 27.3, China mainland. It has not added older AirPods. Plan as if AirPods 3 will not get it.
How to use AirPods 3 for live translation anyway
Your AirPods 3 cannot run Apple’s feature, but they can still play a translation. To them, a translation is just audio, like a podcast. Any app that turns speech into translated speech can send it to your AirPods 3.
That is what our app, Live Translation on Headphones, does. The other person talks near your iPhone. The app listens with the iPhone’s microphone, translates, and you hear it in your AirPods 3 about a second later while they keep talking. Each phrase also shows on the screen with its translation below.
What this looks like with AirPods 3:
- Open fit helps. AirPods 3 do not seal your ears, so you still hear the person’s real voice under the translation. That makes it feel like a natural chat.
- Any recent iPhone. The app needs iOS 18, so iPhone XS and XR through iPhone 14, iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, and iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation) all work.
- Phone in your pocket. It keeps translating with the screen locked.
- Your reply. On the Speak tab you say your answer in your language, and the iPhone speaks it in theirs through the speaker.
- No internet needed. Speech recognition and translation run on the iPhone. Once a language is downloaded, it works offline.
AirPods 3 live translation languages
This is one of the most searched AirPods 3 questions. With Apple’s feature the answer is none, because AirPods 3 are not supported. With an app, it depends on the app.
| Language | Apple’s feature on AirPods 3 | Live Translation on Headphones on AirPods 3 |
|---|---|---|
| English (US and UK), Spanish (Spain), French, German, Italian | No | Yes |
| Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Korean | No | Yes |
| Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) | No | Yes |
| Spanish (Mexico), Turkish, Arabic | No | Yes |
| Hindi, Vietnamese, Russian and others | No | No |
The app covers 14 languages in any direction. If you need a language outside that list, it will not help, and neither will Apple’s AirPods feature. See every option on our languages page.
AirPods 3 live translation in the UK and Europe
The answer does not change by country. Apple’s feature reached the EU with iOS 26.2 in December 2025, and it works in the UK, but only on the supported AirPods. AirPods 3 are left out everywhere.
An app does not depend on Apple Intelligence regions, so it works the same in London, Paris or Madrid.
Three phrases to test it at home
Before a trip, try a quick test with a friend or a video in another language:
- Spanish: “¿Dónde está la estación de tren?” (Where is the train station?)
- French: “Je voudrais l’addition, s’il vous plaît.” (I would like the check, please.)
- Japanese: “これはいくらですか?” (How much is this?)
Play one near your iPhone with AirPods 3 in. You should hear the English in your ears within about a second.
Upgrade or keep your AirPods 3?
| Your situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| iPhone 15 Pro or later, Apple’s 11 languages are enough, and you want new AirPods anyway | AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5 or AirPods Pro 3 with Apple’s built-in feature |
| Your AirPods 3 still work well | Keep them and use an app |
| iPhone 14 or earlier, or iPhone 15 or 15 Plus | An app. New AirPods alone won’t unlock Apple’s feature. |
| You need Turkish, Arabic or Mexican Spanish | An app that supports them |
If you have a supported iPhone and were already planning new AirPods, Apple’s feature is built into iOS and is a good choice. Our Live Translation on AirPods guide covers every supported model. If you just want translations in the AirPods 3 you own, an app is the faster fix.
The app is made by Little Tough LLC, not Apple.
