AirPods Pro 3 Live Translation is the feature many people bought these earbuds for. Someone speaks French or Japanese, and you hear it in English in your ears. So does it just work out of the box?
Almost. The earbuds are fully supported, but Apple’s feature runs on the iPhone, not inside the AirPods. Your phone decides whether you get it. Here is what you need, how to start it, and what to do if your iPhone is left out.
Short answer: Yes, AirPods Pro 3 support Apple’s Live Translation. You need an iPhone 15 Pro or later with iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence turned on, the Translate app and the latest AirPods firmware. It covers 11 languages, such as English, Spanish (Spain), French, German, Japanese and Chinese. Paired with an older iPhone or an Android phone, AirPods Pro 3 cannot run Apple’s feature.
Does AirPods Pro 3 have live translation?
Yes. Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods page names AirPods Pro 3 next to AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods 5 and AirPods Max 2. AirPods Pro 3 came out in September 2025, the same month Apple launched Live Translation with iOS 26.
The AirPods pick up the voice and play the result. The listening, translating and speaking all happen on the iPhone, and Apple says “all processing takes place on your iPhone.” That is why the phone matters more than the earbuds.
AirPods Pro 3 live translation requirements
All five items below must be true at the same time. If one is missing, the Live option in the Translate app will not start with your AirPods.
| Requirement | How to check |
|---|---|
| iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max or any newer iPhone | Settings > General > About > Model Name |
| iOS 26 or later (iOS 27 is current) | Settings > General > Software Update |
| Apple Intelligence turned on | Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri |
| Latest AirPods Pro 3 firmware | Settings > Bluetooth > (i) next to your AirPods > About |
| Apple’s Translate app installed | App Store, search “Translate” |
AirPods firmware updates on its own while the earbuds charge near your iPhone. If the version looks old, put them in the case, plug it in, and leave it next to the phone for half an hour.
Which phones work with AirPods Pro 3 live translation?
This is the question behind most “does it work with iPhone 14?” searches. Apple’s feature needs Apple Intelligence, and only some iPhones have it.
| Phone paired with AirPods Pro 3 | Apple’s Live Translation |
|---|---|
| iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max | Yes |
| Every iPhone 16 model, including 16e | Yes |
| Every iPhone 17 model, iPhone Air | Yes |
| iPhone 18 Pro, 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo | Yes |
| iPhone 15 and 15 Plus | No |
| iPhone 14, 13, 12, 11 and SE models | No |
| Android phones | No |
A software update does not change this. iOS 27 runs on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, but Apple Intelligence still starts at iPhone 15 Pro. AirPods Pro 3 work fine for music and calls on Android, but the Translate app and Apple Intelligence are iPhone only.
If your phone is on the “No” rows, you can still hear live translation in your AirPods Pro 3 with an app that does the work itself. Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, uses Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, which run on iOS 18 without Apple Intelligence. The other person talks, and you hear the translation about a second later while they keep going.
AirPods Pro 3 live translation languages
The language list belongs to the feature, not the earbuds, so AirPods Pro 3 get the same 11 languages as every other supported model. Apple lists them on its feature availability page.
| Language | Apple’s AirPods feature | Live Translation on Headphones |
|---|---|---|
| English (US) and English (UK) | Yes | Yes |
| Spanish (Spain) | Yes | Yes |
| Spanish (Mexico) | No | Yes |
| French, German, Italian | Yes | Yes |
| Portuguese (Brazil) | Yes | Yes |
| Japanese, Korean | Yes | Yes |
| Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) | Yes | Yes |
| Turkish, Arabic | No | Yes |
| Vietnamese, Hindi, Russian and others | No | No |
Chinese (Simplified) is not available for Apple’s AirPods feature in mainland China. Vietnamese works in Apple’s Messages translation, but not in AirPods Live Translation, and our app does not support it either. See the full language list for every option.
How to use live translation on AirPods Pro 3
- Put in your AirPods Pro 3 and connect them to your iPhone.
- Download both languages first: Settings > [your AirPods name] > Live Translation (Beta), then pick the languages you need. Do this on Wi-Fi before a trip.
- Open the Translate app and tap Live.
- Choose the language the other person speaks and the language you want to hear.
- Tap Start Translation.
The faster way: press and hold the stem on both AirPods Pro 3 at the same time. You can also say “Siri, start Live Translation,” or set the Action button to open Translate on an iPhone 15 Pro or later. To answer, speak into your iPhone, and it reads your reply out loud in their language. If nothing happens, go through our not working checklist.
Does AirPods Pro 3 live translation work in Europe and the UK?
Yes. At launch, the AirPods feature was held back in the EU, and many early articles still say so. Apple brought it to the EU with iOS 26.2 in December 2025. The UK was never part of that hold. In the EU, your iPhone just needs iOS 26.2 or later.
AirPods Pro 2 vs 3 for live translation
For translation alone, there is no feature gap. Both start with the same stem press, use the same 11 languages and need the same iPhone. If you already own AirPods Pro 2, you do not need to upgrade for Live Translation. Our AirPods Pro 2 page covers that model, and AirPods 4 with ANC is the lower-cost option Apple also supports.
Apple’s feature or an app?
Your iPhone is a 15 Pro or newer and you only need Apple’s 11 languages: use Apple’s feature. It is built into iOS, and with AirPods Pro 3 it is a great setup.
Your iPhone is older, or you need Turkish, Arabic or Mexican Spanish: an app is the way to use your AirPods Pro 3 for live translation today. Our app works with 14 languages in any direction, offline once a language is downloaded, and keeps going with the screen locked. It is made by Little Tough LLC, not Apple.
For every AirPods model side by side, see Live Translation on AirPods.
