Translate app for China on iPhone: why Google Translate fails there, which apps work without a VPN, AirPods Live Translation rules, and what to download before you go.

Looking for a translate app for China? The first surprise for most travelers is that the app they use at home may stop working the moment they land. Google services are blocked in mainland China, and Google pulled its Translate app there in October 2022.

The good news: an iPhone already has a translator that does not depend on Google. Below is what works in China, what doesn’t, and the setup to finish while you still have home Wi‑Fi.

**Short answer:** On iPhone, the safest translate app for China is one that runs on the phone itself, so it does not need Google or a VPN. Apple’s built-in Translate app does this once you download Chinese (Mandarin) for offline use. Visitors with an iPhone 15 Pro or later and supported AirPods can also use Apple’s Live Translation. For live Mandarin in any other earbuds, an on-device app that plays the translation in your headphones fills the gap.

## What translate app works in China?

The rule of thumb is simple. If an app sends your words to a server outside China, it may be slow or blocked. If it translates on the iPhone, the Great Firewall does not matter.

| Option | Works in China without a VPN? | Good for |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Google Translate | No | Nothing, unless you set up a VPN |
| Apple Translate app (languages downloaded) | Yes | Short phrases, signs, menus, speaker conversations |
| Apple Live Translation with AirPods (visitor’s iPhone) | Yes | Face to face talks on iPhone 15 Pro or later |
| China-made apps such as Baidu Translate or Youdao | Yes | Camera and text, built for the mainland internet |
| Live Translation on Headphones (on-device) | Yes | Hearing Mandarin in any earbuds, on older iPhones too |

One more thing to plan for: Chinese apps often want a Chinese phone number or account for their best features. Apps that run on the iPhone with no account skip that problem.

## Why Google Translate doesn’t work in China

Google’s websites and apps are blocked in mainland China. In October 2022 Google also shut down the Translate app and website there, saying few people used it. A VPN can reach it, but VPNs in China are unreliable and some hotel and café networks block them.

Google Translate’s downloaded offline packs can still help for text. Voice and conversation features are the weak spot, because they lean on the internet. Do not make Google your only plan.

## Apple’s Translate app in China

Apple’s Translate app comes with iOS and does not use Google. Its best trick for China is on-device translation: once a language is downloaded, translation happens on the iPhone with no connection at all.

- Go to **Settings > Apps > Translate > Languages**.

- Tap Download next to **Chinese (Mandarin)** and your own language.

- Back in **Settings > Apps > Translate**, set **On-Device Translation** to **Always** (some iOS versions show an On-Device Mode switch instead).

- Test it in Airplane Mode before you fly.

Use the **Camera** tab for menus and signs, and the **Conversation** tab for a quick back-and-forth through the speaker. It is built into iOS, so there is nothing to buy.

## Does AirPods Live Translation work in China?

For most visitors, yes. Apple only blocks Apple Intelligence when the iPhone was bought in China, or when you are there with an Apple Account set to China mainland. A tourist with an iPhone and account from home can use it.

You still need the right gear: an iPhone 15 Pro or later with iOS 26 or newer and Apple Intelligence on, plus AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2.

Pick the right Chinese. Apple lists Chinese (Mandarin, Simplified) as not available in China mainland, so use **Chinese (Mandarin, Traditional)** for Mandarin speech there. The spoken language is the same; only the on-screen text differs.

For people living in China with China-bought iPhones, that changes soon. Apple is bringing its first AI features, including Live Translation, to China mainland with iOS 27.3, in beta now and due in December 2026. Our post on [Apple Intelligence in China](https://livetranslation.org/blog/apple-intelligence-china-live-translation/) has the dates and rules.

## Traveling to China with an older iPhone or other earbuds

Apple’s live feature leaves out a lot of travelers. That includes everyone on an iPhone 15, iPhone 14 or older, and anyone wearing AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without ANC, Beats or another brand.

Our app, [Live Translation on Headphones](https://livetranslation.org/), was made for that gap. A guide, driver or shop owner speaks Mandarin, and you hear English in your earbuds about a second later while they keep talking. You tap the Speak tab to answer, and the iPhone says your reply in Chinese.

It runs on the iPhone with Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, so it needs no Google, no VPN and no account. Once a language is downloaded, it works offline. It needs iOS 18 or later and covers Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), English and 11 more languages.

> Live Translation on Headphones plays live Mandarin to English in AirPods 2, AirPods 3, Beats or any earbuds during your China trip, with no Google or VPN needed. [Get it on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/live-translation-on-headphones/id6811201454)

## Translate app for China travel: set up before you go

Downloads are the part people forget. Hotel Wi‑Fi in China can be slow for big files, so do all of this at home.

| Step | Where |
| --- | --- |
| Update iOS and your AirPods firmware | Settings > General > Software Update |
| Download Chinese (Mandarin) and your language | Settings > Apps > Translate > Languages |
| Set On-Device Translation to Always | Settings > Apps > Translate |
| Download Live Translation languages (supported AirPods) | Settings > [your AirPods name] > Live Translation |
| Install any other apps and their offline packs | App Store, then inside each app |
| Test everything in Airplane Mode | Control Center |

## Mandarin, Cantonese and written Chinese

Every option above is built for Mandarin, the language most people in mainland China speak. Cantonese, common in Guangdong and Hong Kong, is not supported by Apple’s AirPods feature or by our app. If you are headed to Guangzhou or Shenzhen, expect most service staff to switch to Mandarin, and use camera translation for written signs.

Mainland China writes in Simplified characters. That matters for the camera and on-screen text, not for listening. Our [Live Translation languages guide](https://livetranslation.org/languages/) lists every supported language and variant.

## Which translate app should you use in China?

If you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later and supported AirPods, start with Apple: the Translate app for menus and signs, and Live Translation for conversations. It is built into iOS and works well for visitors.

If your iPhone or earbuds are not on Apple’s list, keep Apple’s Translate app for the camera and add an app that plays the translation in your headphones. That way you can follow a tour guide or a long explanation at a train station, not just one sentence at a time.

> Live Translation on Headphones lets you follow a Mandarin-speaking guide in English in your own earbuds, offline, on iPhones that can’t run Apple Intelligence. [Get it on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/live-translation-on-headphones/id6811201454)

The app is made by Little Tough LLC and is not affiliated with Apple. For more on speech in both directions, read our [Chinese to English live translation](https://livetranslation.org/blog/live-translation-chinese-to-english/) guide.
