You are about to board a plane, ride a subway under a foreign city, or land somewhere your data plan does not reach. Will your iPhone still translate? The good news: yes, if you set it up before you lose signal.

Apple’s own Translate app works with no internet once you download the languages. Apps built on Apple’s on-device tools can too. This page shows the exact settings, which features work offline, and a quick test so you are not guessing at the gate.

Short answer: The best offline translator app for iPhone is often the one you already have: Apple’s Translate app works without internet after you download both languages in Settings > Apps > Translate > Languages. Set On-Device Translation to Always so nothing is sent to Apple’s servers. If you want to hear translations live in your headphones on any iPhone with iOS 18, use an app that runs fully on the device, like Live Translation on Headphones.

Does Apple Translate work offline?

Yes. Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 27 says that with on-device translation, translations are processed on your iPhone “even without an internet connection.” The catch is that the languages must be on the phone first. A language you never downloaded will not work in Airplane Mode.

There is also a setting most people never touch. It decides whether the iPhone may fall back to Apple’s servers when a language is missing.

On-Device Translation settingWhat happens
AutomaticUses the iPhone when the languages are downloaded. Otherwise, translations may be processed on Apple servers.
AlwaysAlways uses the iPhone and your downloaded languages. Nothing goes to a server.

If privacy matters, or you want to be sure your setup works offline, pick Always. Any missing language will show up at home, not at the border.

How to use Apple Translate offline

Do this on Wi-Fi, a day or two before you travel. Each language is a download of its own.

  1. Open Settings, tap Apps, then tap Translate.
  2. Tap Languages. On older iOS versions this screen was called Downloaded Languages.
  3. Tap the download button next to your language and the language you will hear. You need both.
  4. Go back one screen and set On-Device Translation to Always.
  5. Open the Translate app and try a phrase in each direction.

Apple’s settings page says these downloads are used “for on-device translation, Live Translation, or offline use,” so the same step covers more than one feature.

Which iPhone translation features work offline?

Not every translation tool on the iPhone behaves the same way. Here is how the common ones compare with the internet off.

FeatureWorks offline?What you need
Translate app: typed text and Conversation modeYesBoth languages downloaded
Live Translation with AirPods (Apple)Processing runs on the iPhoneiPhone 15 Pro or later, Apple Intelligence, supported AirPods, both languages downloaded
Live Translation on Headphones (app)YesiOS 18 or later, each language downloaded once

On the AirPods row, Apple says that once the language models are downloaded, “all processing takes place on your iPhone.” Apple’s AirPods article does not say in plain words that it works with no connection, so test it before you rely on it.

Does Apple Live Translation work without internet?

The translating happens on the iPhone, not on a server. That is the part that matters offline. But the feature has other limits that no download fixes.

It needs an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence turned on, iOS 26 or later, and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2. It covers 11 languages. If you meet all of that, download both languages and use it; it is built into iOS and works well.

If you have an iPhone 14 or older, a regular iPhone 15, AirPods 2 or 3, Beats, or you need Turkish, Arabic or Mexican Spanish, Apple’s feature will not start at all, online or off.

Best offline voice translator app for iPhone

“Best” depends on how you talk to people. Pick by situation, not by the longest feature list.

A short question at a counter. Apple’s Translate app in Conversation mode is enough. You speak, the iPhone reads the translation aloud, and they answer. It is already on your phone.

A longer talk, a tour, or a family dinner. Turn-taking gets slow, and everyone hears the speaker. Here you want the translation in your ears while the other person keeps talking. That is what Live Translation on Headphones does: the iPhone listens, and you hear the translation about a second later. Each phrase also shows on screen with its translation below.

The app runs speech recognition, translation and voice on the iPhone with Apple’s on-device technology. No audio or text is uploaded, there is no account, and it keeps working with the screen locked. To answer, use the Speak tab: say your reply and the iPhone says it in their language through the speaker. It is made by Little Tough LLC, not Apple.

Text, menus and signs. Apple’s Translate app handles typed text and camera translation. Google Translate for iPhone can also download languages for offline use.

Which languages work offline?

Only the ones you downloaded. Here is what each option covers.

OptionLanguages
Live Translation with AirPods (Apple)11: English (US, UK), Spanish (Spain), French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified, Traditional)
Live Translation on Headphones14, any direction: the same 11 plus Turkish, Arabic and Spanish (Mexico)
Apple Translate appA longer list; see Apple’s feature availability page

The 2-minute Airplane Mode test

Do this at home after the downloads finish. It catches almost every problem before your trip.

  1. Turn on Airplane Mode in Control Center. Make sure Wi-Fi is off too.
  2. Open your translator and say a real sentence, like “Where is the train to the airport?”
  3. Switch directions and have someone answer in the other language, or play a short clip.
  4. If you use headphones, turn Bluetooth back on (Airplane Mode allows it) and test again with them in.

If something fails, the missing piece is almost always a language download. Go back to Settings > Apps > Translate > Languages and look for a language without a check mark.
