Live translation without AirPods is possible on iPhone, but not the version most people saw in Apple’s ads. The in-ear mode, where you hear someone in your language while they keep talking, needs a supported pair of AirPods. Apple has no setting that turns it on for other earbuds, or for no earbuds at all.
Several other Apple features with the same name work fine without AirPods, though. Phone calls, FaceTime, Messages and the Translate app all translate with nothing in your ears. This page lists each one, what it needs, and what to do if you want translations in your own headphones.
Short answer: You can’t use Apple’s in-person Live Translation without AirPods. It needs AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2, plus an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence. Without AirPods, you can still use Live Translation in Phone, FaceTime and Messages on those iPhones, and the Translate app’s Conversation mode on any iPhone. To hear translations in Beats, older AirPods or other headphones, you need a separate app.
Can you use Live Translation without AirPods?
It depends which Live Translation you mean. Apple uses the name for four different features. Only one of them is tied to AirPods.
| Apple feature | Works without AirPods? | What it does without them |
|---|---|---|
| Live Translation with AirPods (Translate app, Live) | No | Needs supported AirPods in your ears |
| Live Translation in the Phone app | Yes | Speaks the translation during a call, on the speaker |
| Live Translation in FaceTime | Yes | Shows translated captions on screen |
| Live Translation in Messages | Yes | Translates texts as you type and as they arrive |
| Translate app, Conversation mode | Yes | Turn by turn, on the screen and speaker |
The first four are part of Apple Intelligence, so they need an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence turned on. Conversation mode is older and runs on any iPhone that has the Translate app. You can read how all of them fit together in our Apple Live Translation guide.
Why Apple’s in-person mode needs AirPods
Apple’s support page for the feature lists the exact pairs: AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2, on the latest firmware. The steps all start the same way: put your AirPods in your ears and connect them.
The AirPods do more than play sound. Their noise cancellation turns the other person’s voice down so you can follow the translated voice. You can start it by pressing and holding both stems, which only works on those models. That is why Apple ties the mode to its own earbuds.
Once it runs, the Live screen can show a transcript to the other person, or play your reply on the iPhone speaker with the Play button. Apple describes those as part of the AirPods flow, not a way to skip the AirPods.
Live translation with other headphones: Beats, Sony, wired
Beats, Sony, Bose, Samsung and wired earbuds are not on Apple’s list. The same goes for older AirPods: AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without ANC, the first AirPods Pro and the first AirPods Max. With any of them, the in-person Live option will not start.
You can still take phone calls through them and use Live Translation in the Phone app, since that feature doesn’t care which headphones you wear. For in-person talks, you need an app that plays translations into any Bluetooth or wired headphones. Our post on Beats live translation goes through the Beats lineup model by model.
How to translate a phone call without AirPods
This is the most useful Live Translation feature when you have no earbuds at all. Apple’s steps:
- Start or answer a call in the Phone app.
- Tap the More button, then tap Live Translation.
- Tap Choose Language if needed, then Start Translation.
If you are not already on speaker or headphones, the call switches to the speaker. Both of you hear an alert that the call is being translated. The other person hears your words spoken in their language, and their answers are translated for you. They don’t need an iPhone. Full details are in our guide to live translating a phone call.
How to translate in person without AirPods
Use the Translate app’s Conversation mode. It is built into iOS and works on older iPhones too.
- Open the Translate app and tap Conversation.
- Choose the two languages.
- Tap the microphone and speak, or hand the phone to the other person.
- Tap play to hear the translation through the speaker.
It goes one turn at a time. Someone talks, stops, then the translation appears. In a shop or at a hotel desk that is often enough. For a long story, a tour guide or a family dinner, it can feel slow. Our post on live translation in person has the settings that make Conversation mode smoother.
Which languages work without AirPods?
Each feature has its own list on Apple’s feature availability page. Here is how they compare for languages people ask about most.
| Language | Phone and FaceTime | Messages |
|---|---|---|
| English, French, German, Italian, Spanish (Spain) | Yes | Yes |
| Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil) | Yes | Yes |
| Chinese (Mandarin) | Yes | Yes |
| Turkish, Vietnamese | No | Yes |
| Arabic | No | No |
Phone and FaceTime use the same 11 languages as the AirPods feature, plus Italian (Switzerland). Messages lists 33. Apple notes that Simplified Chinese is not available in China mainland for these features yet. The Translate app’s Conversation mode covers more, including Arabic, Hindi and Turkish. Every list is on our languages page.
Can AirPods do live translation without an iPhone?
No. The translating happens on the iPhone, not in the AirPods. Apple says all processing takes place on your iPhone. AirPods paired with an Android phone, a Mac or an iPad do not get the in-person Live Translation mode.
How to hear live translations in any headphones
If you want the in-ear experience without Apple’s AirPods list, use an app made for it. Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, works with every AirPods generation, Beats and any Bluetooth or wired headphones.
- Listen tab: they speak, and you hear the translation in your headphones about a second later, while they keep talking. It keeps going with the screen locked.
- Speak tab: you say your reply, and the iPhone says it out loud in their language.
- No headphones at all: it works turn by turn through the iPhone speaker.
It runs on any iPhone with iOS 18 or later, with or without Apple Intelligence. It covers 14 languages in any direction, including Turkish, Arabic and Mexican Spanish, which Apple’s AirPods feature does not. Translation happens on the iPhone and works offline once a language is downloaded. It is made by Little Tough LLC and is not affiliated with Apple.
Which option should you pick?
| Your situation | Best choice |
|---|---|
| You own supported AirPods and an iPhone 15 Pro or later | Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods |
| A phone call in another language | Live Translation in the Phone app |
| Texting someone | Live Translation in Messages |
| A quick question, no headphones | Translate app, Conversation mode |
| Beats, older AirPods or other earbuds, in person | Live Translation on Headphones app |
If you already own supported AirPods and a newer iPhone, Apple’s feature is built into iOS and is the simplest choice for its 11 languages. Check which pairs qualify in our AirPods Live Translation guide.
Quick answers
Can you use Live Translation without AirPods? Not Apple’s in-person mode, which needs supported AirPods. Live Translation in Phone, FaceTime and Messages works without them on an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence.
Can you do Apple live translation without AirPods on an older iPhone? No. Every Live Translation feature needs Apple Intelligence, which starts at iPhone 15 Pro. Older iPhones can use the Translate app’s Conversation mode instead.
Does Live Translation work with Beats or other headphones? Not Apple’s in-person mode. Beats and other brands are not on Apple’s list. An app that plays translations into any headphones fills that gap.
Can AirPods do live translation without an iPhone? No. The translation runs on the iPhone, so AirPods connected to Android, a Mac or an iPad do not get the in-person mode.
Does the other person need AirPods? No. Only you need them to hear their side. You can show them the transcript or play your reply on the iPhone speaker.
