Live translation from Turkish to English means a person speaks Turkish and you hear English a moment later, while they keep going. People want it for a trip to Istanbul or Antalya, for a Turkish in-law at the dinner table, for a barber in Kadıköy, or for a coworker who is more at ease in Turkish.
The catch: Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods does not include Turkish today, on any iPhone or any AirPods. Turkish does show up in other Apple features, though, and there is a way to hear it in your ears. Here is what works, where.
Short answer: Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods does not support Turkish, and neither does Live Translation in Phone and FaceTime. Turkish is supported in Live Translation in Messages and in the Translate app. To hear Turkish as spoken English in your headphones, use an app such as Live Translation on Headphones, which supports Turkish on iPhones with iOS 18 or later and works with any AirPods or headphones.
Does live translation support Turkish?
It depends on which Apple feature you mean. Apple uses the name Live Translation for several things, and each has its own language list on the iOS feature availability page. We checked that page on October 30, 2026.
| Apple feature | Turkish? | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Live Translation with AirPods | No | Speech translated into your AirPods, face to face |
| Live Translation in Phone and FaceTime | No | Translated voice or captions on calls |
| Live Translation in Messages | Yes | Texts translated as you send and receive them |
| Translate app | Yes | Text, voice and camera translation on the iPhone |
So a Turkish text from a hotel in Bodrum can show up in English in Messages, if your iPhone has Apple Intelligence. A Turkish voice in front of you will not come through your AirPods with Apple’s feature. The AirPods list has 11 languages, and Turkish is not one of them. Arabic and Mexican Spanish are missing too.
Why AirPods live translation has no Turkish
Apple launched Live Translation with AirPods in September 2025 with five languages. iOS 26.1 added Chinese, Italian, Japanese and Korean. iOS 27 did not add any new AirPods languages, and neither has any update since.
That holds for every model. AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 5, AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Max 2 all use the same language list. Buying newer AirPods or a newer iPhone does not add Turkish. Apple has not said when, or if, Turkish will come. We will update this page if it does.
How to hear Turkish to English live in your headphones
Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, supports Turkish as one of its 14 languages. It runs on Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, so it does not need Apple Intelligence or a Pro iPhone.
Here is how it works. The other person speaks Turkish. About a second later, you hear English in your headphones while they keep talking. Each Turkish phrase shows on screen with the English below it, so you can read along when a word sounds odd.
| Your setup | Apple’s AirPods feature (Turkish) | Live Translation on Headphones (Turkish) |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17 + AirPods Pro 3 | No | Yes |
| iPhone 13 + AirPods 3 | No | Yes |
| iPhone 11 + wired earbuds | No | Yes |
| No headphones at all | No | Yes, turn by turn on the speaker |
Turkish works with any of the app’s other languages, not just English. Turkish to German, Turkish to Arabic and Turkish to Korean all work the same way. The app’s own menus can also be shown in Turkish.
How to set up Turkish live translation, step by step
- Install the app and connect your AirPods or other headphones.
- On the Listen tab, choose Turkish as the language they speak and English as the one you hear.
- Let iOS download both languages once, on Wi-Fi if you can.
- Start listening and hold the iPhone toward the speaker, or set it on the table between you.
- To answer, open the Speak tab, say it in English, and the iPhone says it out loud in Turkish.
After the download, it works offline, which helps on a ferry across the Bosphorus or in a village with weak signal. It keeps translating with the screen locked. No audio or text is uploaded, and there is no account.
Turkish phrases to test before your trip
Try a few short lines with a friend or a Turkish video first. That way you know how it sounds before it matters.
| Turkish | Sounds like | English |
|---|---|---|
| Kartla ödeyebilir miyim? | Kart-la ur-deh-yeh-beer mee-yeem? | Can I pay by card? |
| Havalimanına ne kadar sürer? | Ha-va-lee-ma-nuh-na neh ka-dar sur-er? | How long does it take to the airport? |
| Bunun içinde et var mı? | Boo-noon ee-cheen-deh et var muh? | Is there meat in this? |
| Odamda sıcak su yok. | O-dam-da suh-jak soo yok. | There’s no hot water in my room. |
| Biraz daha yavaş konuşur musunuz? | Bee-raz da-ha ya-vash ko-noo-shoor moo-soo-nooz? | Could you speak a bit more slowly? |
How accurate is Turkish to English translation?
It is good for daily life: prices, directions, menus, check-in, small talk. A few things about Turkish trip it up:
- Long words. Turkish stacks endings onto one word. Gelemeyeceğim means “I won’t be able to come.” If a speaker swallows the end, the meaning can flip.
- Word order. The verb comes last. The English often appears only when the sentence ends, so pauses help.
- No “he” or “she.” Turkish uses o for both. The English may pick the wrong one, so check the screen.
- Fast street talk. A busy market seller talks quickly and with slang. Ask them to slow down with the last phrase in the table.
Do not rely on it for leases, residence permits, police matters or medical choices. Use a sworn translator or a human interpreter for those.
Turkish to English with the apps already on your iPhone
If you only need a quick answer, Apple’s Translate app is a good start. Open it, tap Conversation, choose Turkish and English, and turn on Auto Translate. It talks through the iPhone speaker, one turn at a time. The Camera tab reads Turkish signs, menus and bus timetables.
On an Apple Intelligence iPhone, Live Translation in Messages can translate a Turkish chat in both directions. For spoken Turkish in your ears, you still need a separate app today.
The app is made by Little Tough LLC and is not an Apple product. For the full list of what Apple and the app support, see our live translation languages guide. Two other languages are missing from Apple’s AirPods list in the same way; read Live Translation Arabic to English. And for every AirPods model, see Live Translation on AirPods.
