Live translation Portuguese to English on iPhone and AirPods: what Apple supports, Brazil vs Portugal Portuguese, setup steps, test phrases, older iPhones.

Someone is speaking Portuguese to you, and you want to hear it in English in your ears, not read it later. It could be a driver in São Paulo, a landlord in Lisbon, your in-laws in Minas Gerais, or a coworker on a call from Rio.

Your iPhone can do this, with two conditions. Your iPhone and AirPods have to be on Apple’s list, and Apple only lists one kind of Portuguese: the Portuguese spoken in Brazil.

**Short answer:** Yes. Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods translates Portuguese (Brazil) to English on an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence on, iOS 26 or later, and AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2. There is no separate option for Portuguese from Portugal. On other iPhones or headphones, an app built on Apple’s on-device translation can play Portuguese to English in your headphones on iOS 18 or later.

## Does Apple Live Translation support Portuguese?

Yes. Portuguese (Brazil) is on Apple’s [iOS feature availability page](https://www.apple.com/ios/feature-availability/#apple-intelligence-live-translation-airpods) for Live Translation with AirPods. It was one of the five launch languages in September 2025, next to English, French, German and Spanish (Spain).

Apple uses the name Live Translation for several features, and Portuguese shows up differently in each. This is what Apple lists as of November 3, 2026:

| Apple feature | Portuguese listed | What you get |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Live Translation with AirPods | Portuguese (Brazil) | Spoken English in your AirPods, face to face |
| Live Translation in Phone and FaceTime | Portuguese (Brazil) | Translated voice or captions on a call |
| Live Translation in Messages | Portuguese (Brazil) and Portuguese (Portugal) | Texts translated as they arrive |
| Translate app, Conversation | Portuguese | Text and voice on the iPhone screen and speaker |

The first three need an iPhone with Apple Intelligence. The Translate app’s Conversation mode works on any recent iPhone.

## Brazilian Portuguese vs Portuguese from Portugal

Only Messages has a Portugal option. For AirPods and calls, a speaker from Lisbon or Porto goes through the Brazilian Portuguese option, because it is the only one there.

That matters more than it does for French or Spanish. European Portuguese sounds quite different from Brazilian Portuguese. People in Portugal often drop vowels, so words get shorter and run together. Many Brazilians say they find it hard to follow at first, and speech tools can struggle the same way. Expect more misses with fast speech in Portugal, and slow it down when it counts.

Some everyday words change too:

| Brazil | Portugal | English |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ônibus | autocarro | bus |
| trem | comboio | train |
| celular | telemóvel | cell phone |
| café da manhã | pequeno-almoço | breakfast |
| você | tu | you (everyday) |

Both sets of words are normal Portuguese, so the translation often gets them right. The risk is speed and accent, not the words. Read along on screen for addresses, prices and times.

## What you need for Portuguese live translation on AirPods

| Item | Apple’s requirement |
| --- | --- |
| iPhone | iPhone 15 Pro or later, Apple Intelligence turned on |
| Software | iOS 26 or later (iOS 27 is current), Translate app installed |
| AirPods | AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Max 2, latest firmware |
| Languages | Portuguese (Brazil) and English downloaded |

Left out: iPhone 14 and every older model, plus iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without ANC and the first AirPods Pro do not work with Apple’s feature. Our [Live Translation on AirPods](https://livetranslation.org/airpods-live-translation/) guide covers every model.

## How to live translate Portuguese to English, step by step

- Connect your AirPods to your iPhone.

- Open **Settings**, tap your AirPods name, then **Live Translation (Beta)**. Download **Portuguese** and **English** while you are on Wi-Fi.

- Check that Apple Intelligence is on in **Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri**.

- Open the **Translate** app and tap **Live**.

- Set **Portuguese** as the language being spoken and **English** as the language you want to hear.

- Tap **Start Translation**, press and hold both AirPods stems, or say “Siri, start Live Translation.”

When you reply in English, your iPhone shows the Portuguese and can say it out loud. Apple says all processing takes place on the iPhone, so it keeps going on a beach in Bahia with no signal, as long as both languages are downloaded.

## Portuguese to English on an older iPhone or other headphones

A lot of people visiting family in Brazil carry an iPhone 13, iPhone 14 or iPhone 15. These run iOS 27, but they have no Apple Intelligence, so the Live button never appears in Translate. Buying new AirPods does not change that.

Our app, [Live Translation on Headphones](https://livetranslation.org/), covers that gap. It uses Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, which do not need Apple Intelligence. The other person speaks Portuguese, and about a second later you hear English in your headphones while they keep talking. Each phrase shows on screen with the English below it.

> Live Translation on Headphones plays Portuguese to English live in AirPods 2, AirPods 3, Beats or any headphones on iPhones with iOS 18 or later. [Get it on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/live-translation-on-headphones/id6811201454)

| Your setup | Apple’s AirPods feature | Live Translation on Headphones app |
| --- | --- | --- |
| iPhone 16 Pro + AirPods Pro 2 | Yes | Yes |
| iPhone 17 + AirPods 3 or Beats | No | Yes |
| iPhone 11 to 14, 15 or 15 Plus + any AirPods | No | Yes |
| Portuguese to Spanish (Mexico), Turkish or Arabic | No | Yes |

The app also lists Portuguese (Brazil) only, so the Portugal accent point above applies to it as well. It works offline once Portuguese is downloaded, keeps translating with the screen locked, and uploads no audio or text. To answer, use the Speak tab: say it in English and the iPhone speaks Portuguese through its speaker. If your iPhone and AirPods are already on Apple’s list and you only need Portuguese and English, Apple’s built-in feature is the easier pick.

## Portuguese phrases to test before your trip

Try these with a friend or a Brazilian video first. Short, clear sentences translate best.

| Portuguese (Brazil) | Sounds like | English |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Com licença, você fala inglês? | Kohn lee-SEN-sah, vo-SAY FAH-lah een-GLAYS? | Excuse me, do you speak English? |
| Quanto custa? | KWAN-too KOOS-tah? | How much is it? |
| Onde fica o ponto de ônibus? | OHN-jee FEE-kah oo POHN-too jee OH-nee-boos? | Where is the bus stop? |
| A conta, por favor. | Ah KOHN-tah, poor fah-VOR. | The check, please. |
| Pode falar mais devagar? | POH-jee fah-LAR mice jee-vah-GAR? | Can you speak more slowly? |

## How accurate is Portuguese to English live translation?

It handles daily life well: prices, directions, menus, check-in, small talk with family. It slips more with fast, casual talk. Watch for these:

- **Slang.** Brazilian words like “legal” (cool), “cara” (dude) or “beleza” (all good) can come out word for word. “Legal” may come out as the law word, not “cool.”

- **Dropped words.** Spoken Brazilian Portuguese often skips the subject, so “Tá bom” or “Tô chegando” leave out who is talking. The English can guess the wrong person.

- **Numbers and money.** Brazil writes R$ 1.500,00 with a dot and a comma the other way around from the US. Check amounts on screen.

- **Portugal speed.** As above, fast European Portuguese is the hardest case. Ask “Pode repetir?” (Can you repeat?).

Use it for travel and family talk, not for rental contracts, visas or medical decisions. Use a human interpreter there.

## Portuguese to English with what’s already on your iPhone

Every recent iPhone has Apple’s Translate app. Tap **Conversation**, pick Portuguese and English, turn on **Auto Translate**, and use the **Face to Face** view. It works for a pharmacy counter or a hotel desk, but it speaks through the iPhone and goes turn by turn.

For texts, Live Translation in Messages lists both Brazil and Portugal, on iPhones with Apple Intelligence. Our guide on how to [translate text messages on iPhone](https://livetranslation.org/blog/translate-text-messages-iphone/) shows the steps.

> Live Translation on Headphones lets you hear Portuguese in English in your own headphones, offline, on iPhones Apple’s feature leaves out. [Get it on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/live-translation-on-headphones/id6811201454)

The app is made by Little Tough LLC and is not an Apple product. Our [live translation languages](https://livetranslation.org/languages/) guide lists every language Apple and the app support.
