You have an iPhone 14 Pro, you updated to iOS 27, and you paired your AirPods. So where is Live Translation? People search this every day, and many of them think a setting is hidden somewhere.

It isn’t. Apple’s Live Translation does not run on any iPhone 14 model, including the 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. The reason is the chip, not your settings. You can still translate conversations on an iPhone 14, and you can still hear them in your earbuds, just not with Apple’s built-in feature.

Short answer: No, Live Translation does not work on iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro or 14 Pro Max. Apple’s feature needs Apple Intelligence, which starts with iPhone 15 Pro, plus iOS 26 or later and supported AirPods. An iPhone 14 can still use the Translate app on its speaker, or a third-party app on iOS 18 or later that plays live translations in any AirPods or headphones.

Does live translation work on iPhone 14 Pro?

No. Apple’s page on Live Translation with AirPods asks for an “iPhone 15 Pro or later” with Apple Intelligence turned on. Apple’s list of Apple Intelligence iPhones starts with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, then every iPhone 16 model and later. No iPhone 14 model is on that list.

The iPhone 14 Pro surprises people because it was Apple’s top phone in 2022, with the Dynamic Island and a 48 MP camera. But it uses the A16 Bionic chip. Apple Intelligence starts with the A17 Pro chip in iPhone 15 Pro. So the line is drawn between the 14 Pro and the 15 Pro, not between “old” and “new” phones.

iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max at a glance

All four models can install iOS 26 and iOS 27. None of them get Apple Intelligence, so none of them get Live Translation.

ModelChipApple Intelligence?Apple’s Live Translation?
iPhone 14A15 BionicNoNo
iPhone 14 PlusA15 BionicNoNo
iPhone 14 ProA16 BionicNoNo
iPhone 14 Pro MaxA16 BionicNoNo

A detail that helps: the A16 Bionic in the iPhone 14 Pro is the same chip used in iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus. Those two phones don’t get Apple’s Live Translation either. Our Live Translation on iPhone 15 post explains that split.

What you will (and won’t) see in Settings

If you are checking your own phone, here is what to expect on any iPhone 14 running iOS 26 or iOS 27:

  • No Apple Intelligence switch to turn on, because the phone doesn’t support it.
  • No Live Translation (Beta) option when you open Settings and tap your AirPods name, even with AirPods Pro 3.
  • Pressing and holding both AirPods stems does not start a translation.
  • Asking “Siri, start Live Translation” does not start it.

None of this means something is broken. Resetting the AirPods, updating firmware or reinstalling the Translate app will not change it. If you have a supported iPhone and still can’t start it, our AirPods Live Translation not working checklist is the place to go.

Live translation on iPhone 14 with AirPods

Apple’s feature needs two things at once: a supported iPhone and supported AirPods. With an iPhone 14, the first part fails, so the AirPods model does not matter.

If you already own AirPods Pro 2 or Pro 3, they will run Apple’s feature the day you move to an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. Every AirPods model and what it needs is in our guide to Live Translation on AirPods.

How to get live translation on iPhone 14

Apple Intelligence is not the only way to translate speech on an iPhone. iOS has on-device speech recognition and translation tools that apps can use, and they work on an iPhone 14. An app can listen through the microphone, translate, and play the result in your headphones.

Live Translation on Headphones is one of these apps. The other person talks, and you hear their words in your language in your AirPods about a second later, while they keep talking. Each phrase also appears on screen with the translation under it, so you can read along.

What that looks like on an iPhone 14:

  • Your reply, out loud. On the Speak tab you say your answer in your language, and the iPhone speaks it in theirs through the speaker.
  • Pocket mode. It keeps translating with the screen locked.
  • No signal needed. After a language is downloaded once, it works offline. No audio or text leaves the phone, and there is no account.
  • 14 languages, any direction. That includes Turkish, Arabic and Spanish (Mexico), which Apple’s AirPods feature does not support even on a new iPhone. See the full languages list.

Translation that already works on iPhone 14

Before you install anything, know what your phone can already do. These built-in tools are fine for a short question at a counter. None of them plays a live translation in your ears.

To try Conversation, open the Translate app, tap Conversation, pick both languages, and tap the microphone each time someone speaks. It works best when both people pause after each sentence.

Should you upgrade your iPhone 14 Pro Max for Live Translation?

Apple’s feature is built into iOS and works well. If you were already planning a new phone and the languages you need are among Apple’s 11, upgrading makes sense. Any iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro or newer model supports it. Skip iPhone 15 and 15 Plus if translation is the reason you’re buying.

Keep the iPhone 14 if it still serves you well, or if you need Turkish, Arabic or Mexican Spanish in your ears. A new iPhone won’t add those to Apple’s AirPods feature.

Quick answers

Does iPhone 14 Pro have live translation? Not Apple’s Live Translation. It needs Apple Intelligence, and the iPhone 14 Pro’s A16 Bionic chip doesn’t support it. The Translate app’s Conversation mode still works.

Can I use live translation on iPhone 14 Pro Max? Not Apple’s version, for the same reason as the 14 Pro. A third-party app on iOS 18 or later can play live translations in your headphones.

Does live translation work on iPhone 14 Plus? No. The iPhone 14 Plus uses the A15 Bionic chip and does not support Apple Intelligence.

Will AirPods Pro 3 give my iPhone 14 live translation? No. Apple’s feature needs both supported AirPods and a supported iPhone, and the iPhone 14 isn’t one.

Will iOS 27 add live translation to iPhone 14? No. iPhone 14 models can run iOS 27, but Apple Intelligence features stay on iPhone 15 Pro and later.

How do I get live translation on iPhone 14? Use the Translate app on the speaker for short exchanges, or an app that translates speech live into your AirPods or other headphones.
