Live Translation on iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max: why Apple’s feature is missing, what still works, and how to hear translations in AirPods.

Can you get Live Translation on an iPhone 13? Many people ask after they update to the newest iOS and still can’t find it. The answer is the same for all four models: iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max.

Apple’s Live Translation is part of Apple Intelligence, and no iPhone 13 model supports Apple Intelligence. That is a hardware limit, not a setting you missed. The good news: you can still translate conversations on an iPhone 13, and you can still hear translations in your AirPods. Here is how.

**Short answer:** No, Apple’s Live Translation does not work on any iPhone 13 model, even with iOS 26 or iOS 27 and new AirPods like AirPods Pro 3. Apple requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence turned on. On an iPhone 13 you can still use Apple’s Translate app in Conversation mode on the speaker, or a third-party app that plays live translations in any AirPods or headphones on iOS 18 or later.

## Does Live Translation work on iPhone 13?

No. Apple’s support page for [Live Translation with AirPods](https://support.apple.com/en-us/123185) lists “iPhone 15 Pro or later” with iOS 26 or later and Apple Intelligence turned on. Apple’s list of Apple Intelligence iPhones starts with iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Every iPhone 13 model uses the A15 Bionic chip, which is not on that list.

That means updating iOS will not add it. An iPhone 13 can install iOS 26 and iOS 27, so you get the new design and many other features, but the Apple Intelligence section never appears in Settings, and neither does Live Translation.

## iPhone 13 mini, 13, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max compared

The Pro models have better cameras and bigger batteries, but for translation they are in the same spot as the base model.

| Model | Chip | Can run iOS 26 and iOS 27? | Apple Intelligence? | Apple’s Live Translation? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| iPhone 13 mini | A15 Bionic | Yes | No | No |
| iPhone 13 | A15 Bionic | Yes | No | No |
| iPhone 13 Pro | A15 Bionic | Yes | No | No |
| iPhone 13 Pro Max | A15 Bionic | Yes | No | No |

## Live translation on iPhone 13 with AirPods

A common hope is that new AirPods will fix it. They won’t, at least not for Apple’s feature. Apple’s Live Translation needs both a supported iPhone and supported AirPods. If the iPhone is an iPhone 13, the feature stays off no matter which AirPods you pair.

| Your AirPods + iPhone 13 | Apple’s Live Translation | Live translation in your ears with a third-party app |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AirPods Pro 3 | No (iPhone not supported) | Yes |
| AirPods Pro 2 | No (iPhone not supported) | Yes |
| AirPods 4 with ANC or AirPods 5 | No (iPhone not supported) | Yes |
| AirPods 4 (no ANC), AirPods 3, AirPods 2 | No (iPhone and AirPods not supported) | Yes |
| Beats or any Bluetooth or wired headphones | No | Yes |

So if you already own AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3, the missing piece is the iPhone. If you plan to buy a new iPhone anyway, Apple’s feature will work with those AirPods on an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. See [Live Translation on AirPods](https://livetranslation.org/airpods-live-translation/) for every AirPods model.

## How to get live translation on iPhone 13

Third-party apps can listen through the iPhone’s microphone, translate, and play the result in your headphones. Many of them use Apple’s own on-device speech and translation tools, which do not need Apple Intelligence. That is why they run on an iPhone 13.

Our app, [Live Translation on Headphones](https://livetranslation.org/), works this way. The other person speaks, and you hear the translation in your AirPods about a second later while they keep talking. Each phrase also shows on screen with its translation below. When it’s your turn, the Speak tab says your reply out loud in their language through the iPhone speaker.

> Live Translation on Headphones brings live translation in your AirPods to iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max on iOS 18 or later, no Apple Intelligence needed. [Get it on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/live-translation-on-headphones/id6811201454)

A few details that matter on an older iPhone:

- **It works offline.** Once a language is downloaded, translation runs on the iPhone. No audio or text is uploaded, and there is no account.

- **It keeps going with the screen locked,** so you can put the phone in your pocket.

- **14 languages in any direction,** including Turkish, Arabic and Spanish (Mexico), which Apple’s AirPods feature does not offer. The full list is on our [languages](https://livetranslation.org/languages/) page.

## What translation already works free on iPhone 13

An iPhone 13 still has useful built-in translation. None of it plays live in your ears, but it may be all you need for a quick question at a shop or hotel desk.

| Feature | On iPhone 13? | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Translate app, Conversation | Yes | Translates what each person says and can read it out through the speaker |
| Translate app, Camera | Yes | Translates text on signs and menus |
| Translate a web page in Safari | Yes | Translates the page you are reading |
| Live Translation with AirPods | No | Needs Apple Intelligence |
| Live Translation in Messages, Phone and FaceTime | No | Needs Apple Intelligence |

## How to use Conversation mode on iPhone 13

- Open the **Translate** app and tap **Conversation**.

- Choose the two languages at the top.

- Tap the microphone and speak, or let the other person speak.

- Tap the More Options button and turn on **Auto Translate** and **Play Translations**, so the app listens for each turn and reads the result aloud.

- Tap **View**, then **Face to Face**, so each person reads from their own side of the screen.

It works well for short, slow exchanges. For a longer talk, a tour, or anywhere you want to hear the translation privately while the other person keeps talking, an app that plays into your headphones fits better.

## Should you upgrade from iPhone 13 for Live Translation?

Upgrade if you were already planning to, you need one of Apple’s 11 AirPods languages, and you want it built in. Any iPhone 16 model, iPhone 17 model, iPhone Air, iPhone 15 Pro or later supports Apple’s feature. Note that iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus do not.

Keep your iPhone 13 if it works fine for you otherwise, or if you need Turkish, Arabic or Mexican Spanish in your ears. A new phone will not give you those languages in Apple’s AirPods feature.

> Live Translation on Headphones lets you keep your iPhone 13 and still hear conversations translated in your AirPods, Beats or any headphones. [Get it on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/live-translation-on-headphones/id6811201454)

The app is made by Little Tough LLC, not Apple. If you later move to a supported iPhone, read our [Apple Live Translation](https://livetranslation.org/apple-live-translation/) guide to set up Apple’s feature.

## Quick answers

**Does iPhone 13 have live translation?** Not Apple’s Live Translation. It needs Apple Intelligence, which starts with iPhone 15 Pro. The Translate app’s Conversation mode does work on iPhone 13.

**Does live translation work on iPhone 13 Pro Max?** No. The iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max use the same A15 Bionic chip as the base model and do not support Apple Intelligence.

**Does live translation work on iPhone 13 mini?** No, for the same reason. A third-party app that runs on iOS 18 can still play translations in your headphones.

**Can iPhone 13 do live translation with AirPods?** Not with Apple’s feature, even with AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3. A third-party app can play live translations in any AirPods on an iPhone 13.

**Will iOS 27 add Live Translation to iPhone 13?** No. iPhone 13 can run iOS 27, but Apple Intelligence features stay limited to iPhone 15 Pro and later.

**How do I get live translation on iPhone 13?** Use the Translate app’s Conversation mode on the speaker, or install an app that translates live into your headphones on iOS 18 or later.
