Live Translation on iPhone 12: Does It Work, and How to Hear Translations Anyway
Does Live Translation work on iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max? Why Apple’s feature is missing, what still works, and how to hear translations in AirPods.
On this page
You updated your iPhone 12 to iOS 26 or iOS 27, paired your AirPods, and looked for Live Translation. It isn’t there. Is something wrong with your phone, or does the iPhone 12 just not get it?
It’s the phone, and it’s not a fault. Apple’s Live Translation runs on Apple Intelligence, and Apple Intelligence starts with iPhone 15 Pro. No iPhone 12 model qualifies. You can still translate on an iPhone 12, though, and you can still hear the translation in your ears. This page shows how.
Short answer: No, Apple’s Live Translation does not work on iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro or 12 Pro Max. Apple requires an iPhone 15 Pro or later with Apple Intelligence turned on and iOS 26 or later. On an iPhone 12 you can use the Translate app’s Conversation mode on the speaker, or an app that plays live translations in any AirPods or headphones on iOS 18 or later.
Does live translation work with iPhone 12?
Not Apple’s version. Apple’s support page for Live Translation with AirPods asks for an “iPhone 15 Pro or later”. Apple’s Apple Intelligence page lists iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 models or later, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo. The iPhone 12 family is not on it.
All four iPhone 12 models use the A14 Bionic chip. That chip is fast enough for iOS 27, but Apple only turns on Apple Intelligence on newer chips. So no setting, reset or update will add Live Translation to an iPhone 12.
iPhone 12 mini, 12, 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max
Not sure which model you have? Open Settings > General > About and look at Model Name. The answer below is the same for all four.
| Model | Chip | Runs iOS 27? | Apple’s Live Translation? |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 12 mini | A14 Bionic | Yes | No |
| iPhone 12 | A14 Bionic | Yes | No |
| iPhone 12 Pro | A14 Bionic | Yes | No |
| iPhone 12 Pro Max | A14 Bionic | Yes | No |
The “Pro” name doesn’t change anything here. Only iPhone 15 Pro and newer Pro models made the cut. Our guide to Live Translation on iPhone lists every iPhone from iPhone XS to iPhone 18 Pro.
AirPods live translation on iPhone 12
This is where most people get stuck. They buy AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods Pro 2 because the box mentions translation, then find nothing on their iPhone 12. Apple’s feature needs both parts: supported AirPods and a supported iPhone.
| AirPods paired with iPhone 12 | Apple’s Live Translation | Live translation with a third-party app |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods Pro 3 | No (iPhone not supported) | Yes |
| AirPods Pro 2 | No (iPhone not supported) | Yes |
| AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Max 2 | No (iPhone not supported) | Yes |
| AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without ANC | No (iPhone and AirPods not supported) | Yes |
| Beats, other Bluetooth or wired headphones | No | Yes |
Your AirPods are not wasted. If you move to an iPhone 15 Pro or newer later, AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3 will run Apple’s feature right away. Our Live Translation on AirPods guide covers each model.
How to get live translation on iPhone 12
An app can do the job Apple Intelligence does here. It listens through the iPhone’s microphone, turns speech into text, translates it, and reads it into your headphones. Apple’s on-device Speech and Translation tools make this possible, and they do not need Apple Intelligence. They run on iOS 18, so an iPhone 12 is fine.
Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, works this way. Someone speaks, and about a second later you hear the translation in your AirPods while they keep going. The screen shows each phrase with its translation underneath. To answer, open the Speak tab, say your reply, and the iPhone speaks it in their language through the speaker.
Three things worth knowing on an iPhone 12:
- It works offline. Once a language is downloaded, everything runs on the phone. Nothing is uploaded, and you don’t need an account or a data plan.
- Pocket mode. Translation keeps running with the screen locked.
- More languages for your ears. 14 languages in any direction, including Turkish, Arabic and Spanish (Mexico), which Apple’s AirPods feature does not cover. See the full languages list.
What the Translate app can do on iPhone 12
Apple’s Translate app is built into iOS and works on iPhone 12. It does not play live into your ears, but for a short chat it is often enough.
| Built-in feature | On iPhone 12? | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Translate app, Conversation | Yes | Taking turns at a counter or desk, read aloud on the speaker |
| Translate app, Camera | Yes | Menus, signs and labels |
| Safari page translation | Yes | Reading websites in another language |
| Live Translation with AirPods | No | Needs Apple Intelligence |
| Live Translation in Messages, Phone and FaceTime | No | Needs Apple Intelligence |
To use Conversation: open Translate, tap Conversation, pick both languages, then tap the microphone and speak. In the More Options menu, turn on Auto Translate so you don’t have to tap for every turn. Each person waits for the other to finish, so it suits quick questions more than a long talk.
A quick test you can run
Want to check any setup before a trip? Play a short video in the other language on a laptop, or ask a friend to read these lines in Spanish, and see how well the translation keeps up:
- “¿Dónde está la estación de tren?” (Where is the train station?)
- “Tenemos una reserva para dos personas a las ocho.” (We have a reservation for two at eight.)
- “¿Puede hablar un poco más despacio, por favor?” (Can you speak a little slower, please?)
Sit about an arm’s length from the speaker. A quiet room gives the best result on any iPhone, old or new.
Should you upgrade from iPhone 12 for Live Translation?
An iPhone 12 is now several years old, so many owners are already thinking about a new phone. If you are, any iPhone 16 or 17 model, iPhone Air, or iPhone 15 Pro and newer runs Apple’s feature with supported AirPods. Watch out for iPhone 15 and 15 Plus: they look new but do not support it. Our iPhone 15 post explains the split.
If your iPhone 12 still works well, there’s no need to replace it just for translation. Upgrading also won’t help if you need Turkish, Arabic or Mexican Spanish in your ears, since Apple’s AirPods feature doesn’t offer them. The iPhone 13 and 14 lines are in the same spot as yours; see Live Translation on iPhone 13.
The app is made by Little Tough LLC and is not affiliated with Apple. When you do move to a supported iPhone, our Apple Live Translation guide shows how to set up Apple’s feature.
Quick answers
Does live translation work with iPhone 12? Apple’s Live Translation does not. It needs Apple Intelligence, which starts with iPhone 15 Pro. The Translate app and third-party translation apps do work on iPhone 12.
Does live translation work on iPhone 12 Pro Max? No. The iPhone 12 Pro Max has the same A14 Bionic chip as the other iPhone 12 models and does not support Apple Intelligence.
Can I use AirPods Pro 3 live translation with iPhone 12? Not Apple’s feature. AirPods Pro 3 need an iPhone 15 Pro or later for it. A third-party app can still play live translations in your AirPods Pro 3 on an iPhone 12.
Will live translation come to iPhone 12 in a future update? Apple has not said it will. iPhone 12 runs iOS 27, but Apple Intelligence features stay on iPhone 15 Pro and newer.
Is live translation available on iPhone 12 mini? No, for the same reason as the other models. Conversation mode in the Translate app works on the speaker.
Is Apple Live Translation free? Yes, it is built into iOS on supported iPhones and AirPods. There is no separate download beyond the Translate app and the languages.
