Google Translate with AirPods: how Live translate plays translations in any AirPods on iPhone, the exact steps, and how it compares to Apple’s Live Translation.

Can you use Google Translate with AirPods? Plenty of iPhone owners ask this after finding out that Apple’s own Live Translation needs a newer iPhone, newer AirPods, or a language Apple doesn’t offer.

Yes, you can. Since March 2026, the Google Translate app on iPhone has a Live translate mode that plays translations in any connected headphones, AirPods included. It runs inside Google’s app, so it does not care which AirPods you own. Below are the exact taps, what it can’t do, and how it stacks up against Apple’s feature.

**Short answer:** Yes. Open Google Translate on your iPhone, connect your AirPods, tap Live translate and choose Listening mode, and you hear the other person translated in your ears. It works with any AirPods model and any headphones, in 70+ languages. Apple’s Live Translation is different: it is built into iOS and starts from the AirPods stems, but it needs an iPhone 15 Pro or later, supported AirPods and one of 11 languages.

## Does Google Translate work with AirPods?

Yes. Google announced on [March 26, 2026](https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/products/translate/live-translate-with-headphones/) that Live translate with headphones had arrived on iOS, working “through any pair of headphones.” To your iPhone, AirPods are just Bluetooth headphones, so the app sends the translated voice to them like any other audio.

That means the AirPods model doesn’t matter. AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 without noise cancellation and the original AirPods Pro all work, even though none of them support Apple’s Live Translation. Beats and other brands work too.

## How to use Google Translate with AirPods, step by step

These steps follow Google’s [iPhone help page](https://support.google.com/translate/answer/6142474?hl=en&co=GENIE.Platform%3DiOS) for Live translate:

- Update the Google Translate app from the App Store. Google says you need the latest version.

- Put in your AirPods and make sure they are connected to the iPhone.

- Open Google Translate and tap the Translate icon.

- At the bottom, tap **Live translate**.

- Choose a mode and your two languages. For hearing someone in your ears, pick **Listening**.

- Tap **Speak** to pause or resume. Tap **Back** at the top to stop.

If Listening is greyed out, the app doesn’t see your headphones. Google says that option is only available with headphones connected. Check that the AirPods show as the audio output in Control Center, then reopen Live translate.

## The four Live translate modes

Google’s help page lists four ways to run Live translate on iPhone. Only one is built for listening in your ears.

| Mode | What you hear | Needs headphones? |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Listening | Real-time translation in your AirPods, or hold the phone to your ear | Yes |
| Conversation | Translations out loud, taking turns | No |
| Text only | Nothing, you read the translation | No |
| Custom settings | You pick text only, speaker or headphones | No |

Google also says the microphone detects on its own when one language stops and the other starts, so you don’t have to tap between speakers.

## Google Translate vs Apple Live Translation on AirPods

Both play a translation in your AirPods while someone talks. The difference is what each one asks of your iPhone, your AirPods and your language.

| | Google Translate Live translate | Apple Live Translation |
| --- | --- | --- |
| iPhone | Any iPhone that runs the latest app | iPhone 15 Pro or later, Apple Intelligence on, iOS 26 or later |
| AirPods | Any model, or any headphones | AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Max 2 |
| Languages | 70+ | 11 |
| How you start it | Open the app, tap Live translate | Press and hold both stems, Action button, Siri or the Translate app |
| Where it’s processed | Google doesn’t say on its help page | “All processing takes place on your iPhone” |

If you already have an iPhone 15 Pro or newer and supported AirPods, and your language is one of Apple’s 11, Apple’s version is the smoother choice. It is built into iOS, starts from the stems, and runs on the iPhone. Our [Apple Live Translation](https://livetranslation.org/apple-live-translation/) guide covers the setup.

If your iPhone or AirPods are older, Google’s app gets you translation in your ears today. And if you need a language that is not in either Apple’s list or in the app below, such as Hindi, Google Translate is the honest answer.

## Is Google Translate or Apple Translate better?

It depends on what you need more. Here is a quick way to decide:

- **Most languages:** Google Translate. Its Live translate list on iPhone runs past 70 languages, including Hindi, Turkish and Arabic.

- **Hands-free with AirPods:** Apple, if your devices support it. The stem gesture is faster than opening an app.

- **Privacy and no signal:** Apple says its AirPods feature runs on the iPhone. Google’s help page does not say Live translate works offline, so test it before a trip without data.

- **Phone in your pocket:** as of a [September 2026 report](https://www.etvbharat.com/en/technology/google-translate-background-mode-android-earpiece-support-ios-enn26090503080), Google’s option to keep Live translate running in the background was Android only, with iOS “coming soon.”

## An on-device option for older iPhones and AirPods

Some people want what Google offers, any iPhone and any AirPods, but with Apple’s privacy model: no upload, no account, and no signal needed. That is the gap [Live Translation on Headphones](https://livetranslation.org/) fills. It uses Apple’s on-device speech and translation tools, so it runs on iPhones with iOS 18 or later, including models with no Apple Intelligence.

> Live Translation on Headphones plays live translations in AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 or any headphones on iOS 18, with speech and translation kept on your iPhone. [Get it on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/live-translation-on-headphones/id6811201454)

How it differs from Google Translate in practice:

| What you need | Live Translation on Headphones |
| --- | --- |
| Keep translating with the screen locked | Yes |
| Works offline after a language is downloaded | Yes |
| Audio or text uploaded | No |
| Account needed | No |
| More than 14 languages | No |

The 14 languages are English (US and UK), Spanish (Spain and Mexico), Portuguese (Brazil), French, German, Italian, Turkish, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean and Arabic, in any direction. The full list is on our [languages](https://livetranslation.org/languages/) page. When you want to answer, the Speak tab says your reply out loud in their language through the iPhone speaker.

## Which AirPods work best with Google Translate?

Any pair works, because Google Translate treats them as normal headphones. In a noisy place, AirPods with noise cancellation help you hear the translated voice over the room. Your iPhone still picks up the other person through its microphone, so hold it toward them.

If you’re choosing AirPods for Apple’s feature instead, the model matters a lot. Our [Live Translation on AirPods](https://livetranslation.org/airpods-live-translation/) guide shows which ones support it. Shopping for dedicated earbuds?
