Apple Watch live translation explained: which watches translate Messages, how the Translate app works on your wrist, the languages, and how to hear people talk.

Does Apple Watch have live translation? Yes, but probably not the kind you saw in the AirPods ads. On Apple Watch, Live Translation is a Messages feature: texts in another language arrive already translated on your wrist. There is also a Translate app for single phrases.

What the watch can’t do is listen to a person talking and keep translating into your ear. That job belongs to the iPhone and your headphones. Here is what each piece does, which watches have it, and what to use for a real conversation.

**Short answer:** Apple Watch has two translation tools. Live Translation in Messages translates texts automatically on Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10 and Ultra 2 (the models Apple named) when they are paired with an iPhone that has Apple Intelligence. The Translate app, part of watchOS 11 and later, translates one phrase at a time by voice or keyboard. Neither one translates a running conversation into your ears; for that you need an iPhone with headphones.

## Does Apple Watch have live translation?

It does, in Messages. Apple’s Apple Watch User Guide says that with Apple Intelligence on your paired iPhone, “you can use Live Translation for text messages on Apple Watch.” The translation runs on device, so your chats stay private.

Apple announced it with watchOS 26 in June 2025. The current version is watchOS 27, and the steps are the same. Your reply can be translated too, so the other person reads it in their language.

Apple Watch is not on Apple’s list for [Live Translation with AirPods](https://livetranslation.org/airpods-live-translation/), the in-person feature. That one needs AirPods and an iPhone 15 Pro or later.

## Which Apple Watch has live translation?

When Apple announced the feature, it named three watches. Apple’s newsroom note says Live Translation in Messages “will be available on Apple Watch Series 9, Apple Watch Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone.”

| Your setup | Live Translation in Messages | Translate app |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Series 9, Series 10 or Ultra 2, paired with iPhone 15 Pro or later | Yes | Yes |
| Series 9, Series 10 or Ultra 2, paired with iPhone 15 or older | No | Yes |
| Other Apple Watch models running watchOS 11 or later | No | Yes |
| Any Apple Watch, in-person talk translated into your ears | No | No |

The iPhone matters as much as the watch. Apple Intelligence runs on iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, every iPhone 16 and 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo. Our [Live Translation on iPhone](https://livetranslation.org/live-translation-iphone/) guide has the full list. For newer watches such as Series 11 or Ultra 3, Apple has not published a fresh list on the pages we checked, so look for the Auto-translate switch described below.

## How to use live translation on Apple Watch

Apple Intelligence must be on in your iPhone’s Settings first. Then, following Apple’s guide [Translate messages on Apple Watch](https://support.apple.com/guide/watch/translate-messages-apd58f82853e/watchos):

- Download both languages. Apple says you need the input and output languages before Live Translation works in Messages.

- Open **Messages** on your Apple Watch and tap a conversation.

- Tap the **contact icon** at the top right.

- Turn on **Auto-translate**, then pick the languages.

- To see the original text, tap the language at the bottom of the conversation.

When a message arrives in another language, the watch may simply ask if you want to turn Live Translation on. To stop, tap the language at the bottom of the chat, then **Stop Translating**. The iPhone side works the same way; see [how to translate text messages on iPhone](https://livetranslation.org/blog/translate-text-messages-iphone/).

## Apple Watch live translation languages

Apple’s [watchOS feature availability page](https://www.apple.com/watchos/feature-availability/) lists Live Translation in these languages:

| Language | Apple Watch Messages |
| --- | --- |
| English (US, UK, Australia, Canada, India, Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa) | Yes |
| Spanish (Spain, Mexico, United States) | Yes |
| French (France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland) | Yes |
| German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil, Portugal) | Yes |
| Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) | Yes |
| Turkish, Vietnamese, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish | Yes |
| Arabic, Hindi, Russian | No |

Simplified Chinese is marked not available in China mainland for now. That list is much longer than the 11 languages of the AirPods feature. Every list side by side is on our [Live Translation languages](https://livetranslation.org/languages/) page.

## The Translate app on Apple Watch

The Translate app is the watch’s pocket phrasebook. Apple’s guide [Translate text and voice on Apple Watch](https://support.apple.com/guide/watch/translate-apd25ec90584/watchos) describes it like this:

- Pick a target language, tap the microphone and say a phrase. Words are translated as you speak.

- Tap play to hear the translation from the watch speaker, or turn on **Auto-Play Translations**.

- Download both languages to translate with no internet connection.

- Save favorites, and change the playback speed in settings.

- When you travel somewhere with a different language, Translate can show up in the Smart Stack.

It works well for short lines: “Where is the train to the airport?” or “No peanuts, please.” It is turn by turn, though. You talk, you play the answer, you hand over the moment. It does not keep listening while the other person speaks for a minute.

## Can Apple Watch translate a conversation in real time?

Not hands-free. To follow someone who is talking, you need a microphone that keeps listening and a voice in your ear. On Apple’s side that is Live Translation with AirPods: iPhone 15 Pro or later, AirPods 4 with ANC, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2 or later, or AirPods Max 2, in 11 languages. If you have that setup, use it. It is built into iOS.

Many watch owners don’t. Their iPhone is a 13 or 14, their AirPods are older, or they need Turkish or Arabic.

> Live Translation on Headphones turns your iPhone and any headphones into a live interpreter: they speak, and you hear it in your language about a second later. [Get it on the App Store](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/live-translation-on-headphones/id6811201454)

It runs on any iPhone with iOS 18 or later, with AirPods of any generation, Beats, or any Bluetooth or wired headphones. It keeps translating with the screen locked, so the phone can stay in your pocket. On the Speak tab, you say your reply and the iPhone says it out loud in their language. To be clear, it is an iPhone app; there is no Apple Watch version.

## Which one should you use?

| You want to | Best choice |
| --- | --- |
| Read foreign-language texts on your wrist | Live Translation in Messages on Apple Watch |
| Say or type one short phrase | Translate app on Apple Watch |
| Follow a person talking, supported iPhone and AirPods, Apple’s 11 languages | Apple’s Live Translation with AirPods |
| Follow a person talking on an older iPhone, any headphones, or Turkish or Arabic | Live Translation on Headphones app |
