Live Translation on AirPods Max works only on AirPods Max 2 (A3454). How to check your model, start it with the listening mode button, and options for the original.

Can you use Live Translation on AirPods Max? Yes, if you have AirPods Max 2, the over-ear model Apple announced in March 2026. The first AirPods Max, from 2020, and the USB-C version from 2024 are not supported.

This page shows how to tell which AirPods Max you own, how to start a translation with the listening mode button, and what owners of the original model can use instead.

**Short answer:** Apple’s Live Translation works on AirPods Max 2 (model A3454) with the latest firmware, paired with an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26 or later with Apple Intelligence turned on. To start it, press and hold the listening mode button. The original AirPods Max (A2096, Lightning) and AirPods Max with USB-C (A3184) do not get Apple’s feature, but a third-party app can still play translations in them on iOS 18 or later.

## Is Live Translation available on AirPods Max?

Only on AirPods Max 2. Apple’s support page lists the AirPods that can use Live Translation: AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2. The first AirPods Max is not on that list.

The reason is the chip. Apple’s AirPods Max 2 announcement says that, powered by the H2 chip, features like Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness and Live Translation come to AirPods Max for the first time. The earlier AirPods Max models use the older H1 chip, including the 2024 version that only swapped Lightning for USB-C.

## Which AirPods Max do I have?

The two newer models both charge over USB-C, so the port alone does not tell you. Check the model number instead:

- Open **Settings** and tap the name of your AirPods Max. Or go to **Settings > Bluetooth** and tap the small “i” next to them.

- Look for the model number. It starts with A.

- No iPhone nearby? Apple says the number is printed behind the cushion on the left ear cup.

| AirPods Max | Model number | Year | Apple’s Live Translation |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| AirPods Max 2 | A3454 | 2026 | Yes |
| AirPods Max (USB-C) | A3184 | 2024 | No |
| AirPods Max (Lightning) | A2096 | 2020 | No |

## What AirPods Max 2 need for Live Translation

The headphones are only half of it. Your iPhone has to meet Apple’s requirements too.

| Requirement | What Apple asks for |
| --- | --- |
| Headphones | AirPods Max 2 with the latest firmware |
| iPhone | iPhone 15 Pro or later: every iPhone 16 and 17 model, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. Not iPhone 15 or 15 Plus. |
| Software | iOS 26 or later (iOS 27 is current) |
| Apple Intelligence | Turned on |
| App | Apple’s Translate app installed |
| Languages | 11: English (US, UK), Spanish (Spain), French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Simplified, Traditional) |

To check the firmware, go to **Settings > Bluetooth**, tap the “i” next to your AirPods Max 2 and look under About. Firmware updates install on their own while the headphones are charging and near your iPhone. Which iPhones qualify is covered model by model in our [Live Translation on iPhone](https://livetranslation.org/live-translation-iphone/) guide.

## How to use Live Translation on AirPods Max 2

Do the setup once, ideally on Wi‑Fi before a trip:

- Put on your AirPods Max 2 and make sure they are connected to your iPhone.

- Go to **Settings**, tap your AirPods Max 2, then **Live Translation (Beta)**, and download the language the other person speaks and your own.

- Open the Translate app, tap **Live**, and pick the two languages.

Then start a translation in any of these ways:

| How to start | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| Listening mode button | Press and hold the listening mode button on AirPods Max 2 |
| Translate app | Tap Start Translation on the Live screen |
| Siri | Say “Siri, start Live Translation” |
| iPhone Action button | Set the Action button to Translate, then press it while wearing your AirPods Max 2 |

Note that the stem gesture Apple describes for AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 does not apply here. On AirPods Max 2 it’s the button. The other person speaks, and you hear the translation in your headphones. What you say is shown and spoken in their language on your iPhone.

If nothing happens, our [fix guide](https://livetranslation.org/blog/airpods-live-translation-not-working/) lists the usual causes, starting with Apple Intelligence and language downloads.

## Is Live Translation coming to the original AirPods Max?

Apple has not announced it. Apple ties Live Translation on AirPods Max to the H2 chip in AirPods Max 2, and the first-generation models, Lightning and USB-C, are not on its support page. We will update this page if Apple’s list changes.

That still leaves original AirPods Max owners with a real option: an app that does the listening and translating on the iPhone and simply plays the result in whatever headphones are connected.

Our app, Live Translation on Headphones, works with every AirPods model, Beats, and any Bluetooth or wired headphones. It does not need Apple Intelligence, so it also runs on an iPhone 11 to 14 or an iPhone 15. The other person talks and you hear the translation about a second later while they keep going. It keeps working with the screen locked.

It covers 14 languages in any direction, including three that Apple’s AirPods feature does not: Turkish, Arabic and Spanish (Mexico). Speech recognition and translation run on the iPhone, and it works offline once a language is downloaded.

## Which option fits you

| Your setup | Best choice |
| --- | --- |
| AirPods Max 2 + iPhone 15 Pro or later, one of Apple’s 11 languages | Apple’s Live Translation, built into iOS |
| Original AirPods Max (A2096 or A3184) | A third-party app, or the Translate app’s Conversation mode on the speaker |
| AirPods Max 2 + an older iPhone (iPhone 11 to 14, iPhone 15 or 15 Plus) | A third-party app that runs on iOS 18 |
| You need Turkish, Arabic or Mexican Spanish in your ears | A third-party app that supports those languages |

If you have AirPods Max 2 and a supported iPhone, Apple’s built-in feature is the natural first choice. Shopping for smaller earbuds instead? [AirPods 4 with ANC](https://livetranslation.org/blog/airpods-4-live-translation/) and [AirPods 5](https://livetranslation.org/blog/airpods-5-live-translation/) both support it. Background on how Apple’s feature works is in our [Apple Live Translation](https://livetranslation.org/apple-live-translation/) guide.

The app is made by Little Tough LLC, not Apple.
